BettingDiaryThe Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina plays host to the Wyndham Championship which gets going on Thursday and we take a look at the tournament from a betting angle.

Sedgefield Country Club is a par 70 layout and it is a course which favours accuracy over distance which is why we often find the long hitters sitting this one out. Finding a good position in the fairway is important as the greens are small and they are also quick and it is the type of course where a player can go very low if he finds a rich vein of form.

The field isn’t the strongest and it has an open look to it with Shane Lowry, Will Zalatoris and Sungjae Im topping the betting boards at 18/1. As far as South African interest goes Christiaan Bezuidenhout is a 40/1 shot this week and an 11/20 shot in the Top South African market.

SELECTIONS:

Sungjae Im each way at 18/1

Of those at the top of the betting boards Sungjae Im offers the most value in my opinion. He broke a run of fairly poor form with a 2nd place in his last start and his course form is very solid with a Top 25 last year and two Top 10’s in 2019 and 2020. Im has a game that is ideally suited to courses where plotting your way around them is more important than overpowering them.

Taylor Pendrith each way at 40/1

Pendrith makes his debut at the course, but it his recent form that catches the eye with three consecutive Top 15 finishes including a runner-up finish last week. He looks to have an excellent all round game and while the fact that he has not played here before is a negative, this isn’t the strongest field and we could be shouting home a first time winner this week.

Brian Harman each way at 33/1

Brian Harman is playing the best golf of his career at the moment and he has two Top 10 finishes in his last 3 starts. He is a bit erratic and tends to throw in the odd missed cut as well and that is certainly true of his course form where he has had a Top 3 and a Top 10 finish but he has also missed the cut 5 times in his last 8 starts here.

Rory Sabbatini each way at 150/1

I was looking for a South African interest, but have settled on an excellent South African in Rory Sabbatini who is now Slovakian. Sabbatini has had 4 Top 10 finishes here in his last 6 starts including a 10th place in 2021 and while his recent form is nothing to write home about he has made his last two cuts and at current prices is worth having on side this week.
