BettingDiaryStage 16 of the Tour de France covers 164 kilometres starting from La Tour-du-Pin and finishing in Villard-de-Lans. We look at the stage from a betting perspective.

Stage 15 Wrap

Stage 15 as we expected came down to a battle of the contenders for the Yellow Jersey and it was Pogacar who managed to outsprint Roglic to grab the win and the time bonus. There was very little attacking amongst the GC contenders with Jumbo having so many riders to help power Roglic up the climb.

The big losers on the day were Bernal and Quintana with both of them dropping out of contention and out of the betting. Roglic is now into 2/7 with Pogacar looking like the only rider to challenge him. The battle for the podium is exciting though with a number of riders still in contention.

Stage 16 has plenty of climbing but the summit of the last big climb is 20 kilometres from the finish.

Stage 16 Verdict

We can expect a frantic start with intermediate sprint points up for grabs after the first small climb and competition for the breakaway, however long it takes to form, will be fierce.

Looking ahead there are two HC climbs on the menu on Wednesday so preference is for the breakaway rather than the overall race leaders who may save their legs.

With Bernal no longer a factor in the GC expect Ineos to target this stage and the betting suggests Kwiatkowski and Carapaz are the most likely. Alaphilippe is almost certain to be a factor and although he has looked below par on more than one occasion on this tour this finish really does suit him. The rest day may well prove to be a blessing and he gets the nod from a lengthy "shortlist".

The back-up comes in the shape of Warren Barguil who should be off the leash as his team leader Nairo Quintana has fallen out of GC contention.

Stage 16 Bets:

Julian Alaphilippe at 9/1

Warren Barguil at 40/1
