India v England (Guyana)

India

India put paid to Australia's hopes of reaching the semi finals with a 24 run win in St. Lucia on Monday. Rohit Sharma top scored with 92 in their bat first total of 205/5 and Arshdeep Singh took 3/37 as Australia's chase ended on 181/7.

India saw off Bangladesh by 50 runs in their second S8 outing which came in Antigua. They posted 195/5 batting first with Hardik Pandya top scoring, 50 not out and he hit 3 of his sides 13 maximums. Kuldeep Yadav returned figures of 3/19 and there were 2 wickets a piece for Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah as Bangladesh closed on 146/8.

India beat Afghanistan by 47 run in their first Super 8 match in Barbados. Suryakumar Yadav top scored with 53 in their bat first total of 181/8, Afghan were all out for 134 in reply with 3 wickets a piece for Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav struck twice.

Earlier in the pool stage India beat Ireland, Pakistan and USA and their clash with Canada was washed out.

England

England sealed their semi final spot with a 10 wicket win over USA in Barbados. Chris Jordan took 4 wickets in a single over including a hat trick as USA were all out for 115. The chase was completed in just 9.4 overs with Buttler smashing 83 off 38 balls and they finished as runners up to South Africa in their Super 8 group.

In their second Super 8 outing England lost to South Africa by 7 runs. The Proteas posted 163/6 (Archer 3/40) and after falling behind in the chase Harry Brook hit 53 and Livingstone 33 in no time but after they fell England failed to get over the line.

England put in arguably their best display of the tournament in beating West Indies by 8 wickets in their first S8 match. West Indies posted 180/4 with 4 England bowlers taking a wicket each and Rashid (1/21) was the most economical. Phil Salt took control of the chase and went on to finish unbeaten on 87 off 47 balls and Bairstow was 48 not out when the target was reached in 17.3 overs.

England had ground to make up in order to come through their group as distant runners up to Australia. They won 2, lost 1 and had 1 game washed out and they edged out Scotland on net run rate with Namibia and Oman also failing to make it.

The Verdict

India look to have by far the stronger bowling unit so England will need their batsmen to fire to have any chance of turning the outright tournament favourites over.

England's Adil Rashid has been in the wickets and most economical and he gets my vote to strike at least twice.
