South Africa v Zimbabwe, Hobart

This match follows another Group 2 clash between Bangladesh and the Netherlands and this group also includes Pakistan and India.

The Proteas narrowly missed out on a place in the semi finals in the 2021 World T20, finishing third in the S12 group on net run rate behind England and Australia. They were semi finalists in 2009 and 2014 but have yet to make it to the final.

Zimbabwe never made it to the 2021 finals but they made sure they qualified for the S12's this time around after coming through the qualifiers last week.

Recent Form

The Proteas beat New Zealand by 9 wickets in their most recent warm up in Brisbane. They bowled the Black Caps out for 98 with Maharaj 3/17 the top bowler and Rossouw was unbeaten on 56 in a straight forward run chase. At the turn of the month South Africa lost 2-1 in India. The Proteas beat Ireland twice in Bristol in early August last year and prior to that they came from behind to win a 3 match series away to England 2-1.

In reaching the S12's Zimbabwe beat Ireland by 31 runs, lost to West Indies by 31 runs and then beat Scotland by 5 wickets last Friday. All of those matches were staged at Hobart and Sikander Raza is currently the top Zimbabwe run scorer with 136 from 3 innings and he has also taken 3 wickets.

The Betting

South Africa are currently trading at around 1/10 to win the game and Zimbabwe can be backed at around 5/1

Quinton de Kock is 5/2 to top score for South Africa and Ervine and Raza are 7/2 to do likewise for Zim

Looking at the long term betting markets at the time of writing South Africa had been trading at around 7/1 to win the tournament and Zimbabwe are 150/1.

The Verdict

South Africa have won all 5 of the previous head to heads and it should be straight forward for the Proteas but it's hardly the most enticing of betting heats. My interest is limited to Rilee Rossouw to be top SA run scorer.

Bets: Top SA Run Scorer Rilee Rossouw at 7/2 with Sportingbet
