Remember the semi finals are settled over 2 legs. In the outright betting to win this trophy Betway currently have Arsenal favourites at 15/10, Liverpool are 16/10, Spurs are 48/10 and Newcastle 58/10.
Tuesday, Arsenal 7/10 Draw 2.95/1 Newcastle 7/2
The Gunners have so far thrashed Bolton 5-1 in a home fixture, they were 3-0 winners at Preston and they booked a semi final berth with a 3-2 home win over Palace. Arsenal are currently second in the EPL standings, 6 points behind Liverpool. They are also well placed to qualify for the UCL knockout rounds having won 4, drawn 1 and lost 1 of the new format matches.
Newcastle's cup run started a round earlier than their opponents here. They won 2-1 at Forest and then made home advantage count in the next 3 rounds, seeing off Wimbledon (1-0), Chelsea (2-0) and Brentford (3-1). Newcastle are the only 1 of the 4 semi finalists who are not involved in European competitions and their recent EPL form is excellent with 5 straight wins seeing them rise from mid table to fifth.
The Verdict
When the teams met in the EPL in November Newcastle were 1-0 winners at St. James Park and I don't see too much in this. Given Arsenal have dropped league points at Fulham, at home to Everton and most recently away at Brighton over the last month or os I give Newcastle a punchers chance of coming away with a draw.
Bet: 1st Leg Match Result Draw at 2.95/1 with Betway
Wednesday, Spurs 36/10 Draw 36/10 Liverpool 6/10
Spurs were 2-1 winners away to Coventry at the start of this cup run and they went on to knock out both Manchester clubs in subsequent home ties, getting the better of City (2-1) and United (4-3). Spurs have had huge problems with injuries to key defenders and they have lost 5 of the last 7 EPL games including a 6-3 home defeat to Liverpool on 22nd December. Spurs are also involved in the Europa League and they are just outside the automatic qualification places having won 3, drawn 2 and lost 1 of their matches.
The holders of this trophy Liverpool have faced Premier League opposition in all 3 of their ties. They thrashed West Ham 5-1 at Anfield, then won 3-2 at Brighton before beating Southampton 2-1 away from home in the quarter finals. Liverpool are now 6 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the EPL log and they have a game in hand. They are also the only team to have won all 6 matches in the UCL and can take it easy if they wish in the last 2 games before the knockout rounds commence.
The Verdict
Liverpool relied on their youngsters in winning this trophy last season but whilst Slot may opt to rotate to some degree I expect a strong line up for the first leg. Whilst that could spell trouble for Spurs I still think the home side will score and Son gets the vote.
Bet: Anytime goalscorer Son at 2.55/1 with Betway
