Aston Villa 0.82/1 Draw 2.57/1 Everton 3.53/1

Villa let even money favourite backers down in a 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Bournemouth last week. They registered 15 goal attempts but only 2 were on target in a very disappointing start to the season.

Everton lost their opening match 1-0 to Chelsea at Goodison with the only goal coming from the penalty spot. Their away record last season was shocking and although reinforcements have begun to arrive this week they still need a striker with Calvert Lewin injured and Anthony Gordon having to lead the line last week.

Verdict:

Villa did the double over Everton last season but after being sweet on their chances of victory last week I'd rather focus on any time goalscorer plays.

Villa's considerable attacking talent failed to fire at Bournemouth and I fancy a speculative play on defender Matty Cash, who scored in this fixture last season to pop up. Anthony Gordon is arguably as likely as anyone to break Everton's duck and given he led the line last week his price to find the net does make some appeal.

Bets: Anytime goalscorer Matty Cash at 8.5/1

Anytime goalscorer Anthony Gordon at 4.12/1

Arsenal 0.48/1 Draw 3.61/1 Leicester 5.43/1

The Gunners kicked off their season with a thoroughly deserved 2-0 win away to Palace. Martinelli and a late own goal sealed maximum points and they looked very tuned up for that opening match.

Leicester let a 2-0 lead slip in their 2-2 draw at home to Brentford. They looked to be well in control for an hour before Brentford pulled a goal back and they conceded the equalizer just 4 minutes from the end of normal time.

Verdict:

Arsenal impressed last week whilst Leicester were also good for an hour and it should be a decent contest to watch, hopefully with goals for both sides and 3 or more in total..

Bets: Total goals and both teams to score, over 2.5 and yes at 12/10

Brighton 1.45/1 Draw 2.23/1 Newcastle 2/1

Brighton came away from Old Trafford with a 2-1 win over Manchester United. Pascal Gross scored twice in the first half and although they conceded a scrappy own goal halfway through the second period they were able to hold out for maximum points.

Newcastle were not overly extended to see off newly promoted Nottingham Forest 2-0 at St. James Park. Schär and Wilson scored the goals in the second half and Forest failed to register a shot on target.

Verdict:

Encouraging starts for both sides and although Brighton's win grabbed the bigger headlines they did take more points on the road than at home last season. I have this one booked for a draw, quite possibly 1-1.

Bets: Match result draw at 2.23/1 or Correct score 1-1 at 66/10

Southampton 1.28/1 Draw 2.48/1 Leeds 2.08/1

Southampton took a surprise lead through Ward-Prowse at Spurs last week but they were 2-1 down by half time and went on to lose the game 4-1. Having lost each of their last 4 matches of last season they will be desperate to open their account here.

Leeds only escaped relegation on the final day of last season but they made a winning start to the new campaign with a 2-1 home victory over Wolves. They fell behind early doors but Rodrigo had them level well before half time and an own goal on 74 minutes sealed the points although Wolves did miss a couple of really good chances.

Verdict:

This looks a tricky call and I will again visit the goalscorer markets. New signing Brenden Aaronson was very lively on debut for Leeds and with a lack of obvious candidates for goals in the visitors ranks he gets my vote to find the net.

Bets: Anytime goalscorer Brenden Aaronson at 44/10

Brentford 2.74/1 Draw 2.57/1 Man United even money

Ivan Toney and substitute Josh Dasilva rescued a point for Brentford last week. They were often a handful for top clubs in their maiden top flight campaign and they look to have recruited well in pre-season so we can probably expect more of the same.

United's dismal 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton drew fierce criticism. Erik ten Hag opted to put Ronaldo on the bench and with their transfer activity so far resembling a circus the fans are once again venting frustration at the clubs owners.

Verdict:

Brentford will be really up for this and I can see them causing United plenty of problems. I see goals for both sides and hopefully at least one more.

Bets: Total goals and both teams to score, over 2.5 and yes at 12/10
