Bournemouth 11/4 Draw 24/10 Aston Villa even money

After being relegated in 2020/21 Bournemouth bounced back into the top flight with promotion from the Championship last season. So far they have been pretty quiet in the transfer market with Marcus Tavernier joining from Middlesbrough for a reported, £12.5m and Joe Rothwell (Blackburn) and Ryan Fredericks (West Ham) arrived without a fee.

Bournemouth are 9/20 favourites to be relegated this season.

Villa blew hot and cold last season, Steve Gerrard's arrival after Dean Smith was sacked sparked improvement but they finished fourteenth with a points tally of 45. Villa won 7 of 19 road trips last season, drawing just 1 and losing 11 with 23 goals scored and 25 conceded.

Among the new arrivals Diego Carlos  comes in from Sevilla (£26m) and Philippe Coutinho's loan from Barcelona has been made permanent.

Villa are 11/2 top finish in the top 6 and 7/10 to finish in the top 10.

Verdict:

I think Villa will have a decent season and will take them to get off to a winning start. The even money makes some appeal but in the first round of matches I'm keeping stakes small and the bets more speculative. Villa to win 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 is my play.

Bets: Multiscores 0-1, 0-2 or 0-3 at 26/10

Newcastle 13/20 Draw 28/10 Nottingham Forest 9/2

Eddie Howe guided Newcastle out of the drop zone and into a mid table finish last season. They finished with 49 points although only 19 of those were earned away from home.

Despite the wealth of the Saudi owners transfer activity at the time of writing has been limited to the arrivals of Sven Botman from Lille for £35m, keeper Nick Pope £10m and Matt Targett, who was on loan last season has joined permanently.

Newcastle are 5/2 top finish in the top 6 and 4/10 to finish in the top 10.

After a long absence Forest are back in the big league. They came up through the play offs and have shown plenty of ambition in the transfer market paying fees for Orel Mangala - Stuttgart, £12.7m, Taiwo Awoniyi - Union Berlin, £17.5m, Moussa Niakhate - Mainz, £17m and Neco Williams - Liverpool, £17m alongside a number of undisclosed fee and loan signings.

Forest are 6/1 to finish in the top 10 and they are 5/4 to be relegated.

Verdict:

Forest have strengthened considerably, they will need the new recruits to settle in quickly and if they do they could surprise a few people. Staying up will be the target and fresh from promotion I fancy they will cause Newcastle a problem or too.

Newcastle will be a popular choice in weekend multiples and they may well arrive but my preference here is for both teams to find the net.

Bets: Both teams to score? (yes) at 19/20
