Group A Betting Update

Italy took early control of the group with a 3-0 win over Turkey whilst Switzerland had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Wales and remember that earlier on Wednesday Turkey and Wales will clash in Baku

As far as the group betting is concerned Italy are now 1 / 10 to top this quartet and Switzerland are a 8/1 chance. Remember the are four best third place finish places available to reach the knockout rounds and Switzerland are trading at around 6/10 to make it through.

Italy

Italy have the advantage of playing all their group matches in Rome and they started with a comfortable 3-0 win over Turkey. Although the first half finished without a goal Italy were in front through an own goal early in the second half and they went on to wrap things up with further goals from Immobile and Insigne.

It was a winning start for favourite backers with Italy obliging for those punters who took odds of around 8/15. All the stats were in the Italians favour with 63% of possession, 8 shots on target (Turkey failed to register) and a corner count 8-2 in their favour.

Italy came through their qualifying group with a perfect record, scoring 37 goals and conceding just 4. World Cup 2022 qualifying is also looking good after 2-0 wins in each of their first 3 matches against Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Lithuania and in the outright betting to win this tournament they are currently trading at around 7/1 (from 9/1)

Switzerland

Switzerland opened up with a 1-1 draw against Wales in Baku. On the balance of play and chances created they will feel they should have won the game but Embolo's opening goal early in the second half was cancelled out by a 74th minute equalizer and despite dominating thereafter the Swiss couldn't find a winner.

They were awarded 12 corners in their opening match, 1 of which led to Embolo's goal.

If Switzerland were to lose here they still have a game against Turkey to come but they would almost certainly have to win that game and hope that is enough to either secure a top 2 finish or one of the best third place qualifying positions.

In the outright betting to win the tournament Switzerland are priced at around 66/1

The Betting

Italy are trading at around 6/10 to win the game with the draw at 2.72/1 and Switzerland can be backed at around 49/10

A game of 3 goals or more is priced at 1.27/1 and it's a similar price for both teams to score.

The Verdict:

Italy are obviously in a good space right now and it will take something special from Switzerland to beat them in Rome. I can see Switzerland causing Italy far more problems than Turkey did and I see capacity for goals, though not a bucket load.

A total goals count of 2-3 covers a number of scorelines I can envisage here and that outcome was also the way to go in the first 2 matches in this group.
