Venue: St Andrews, Scotland.
Dates: Thursday 15th – Sunday 18th October 2020
Tournament Preview
Few venues in world golf are as iconic as the Old Course at St Andrews and it once again comes to the fore as the host of the Scottish Championship. Links golf is notorious for cutting the wheat from the chaff and this could be a real test of every player’s metal in Autumnal conditions up on the East Coast of Scotland. The event has been launched in 2020 off the back of the COVID 19 pandemic but with £1 million in the prize pot, there is no shortage of money and ranking points for the biggest names on the European Tour to play for.
Betting Preview
Outright Winner
The course at St Andrews always tests the best golfers in the world – regardless of the weather and there could be plenty of big names in contention come Sunday:-
Englishman Matt Wallace sits off the pace on the European Tour Money List, but he has a reputation as a big event player, and he hasn’t missed a cut for over two months.
European Ryder Cup legend Lee Westwood has already won on the European Tour this season and he could turn it on again here, in conditions that should suit him down to the ground.
Emerging Englishman Aaron Rai won the Scottish Open two weeks ago and looked in good form at the BMW PGA Championship last week so looks decent value to content once more this week.
Eddie Pepperell is one of the most consistent performers on the European Tour and he looked in excellent form when finishing in the top 10 at Wentworth last time out.
Despite enduring a tough week at the BMW PGA Championship last week, Sam Horsfield has been in excellent form on the European Tour this season – winning twice to sit 20th on the money list.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Malaysian superstar Gavin Green tends to always be in and around the contenders at the big events and he will be keen to get off to a fast start this week.
Young Scot Connor Syme will appreciate the conditions more than most at St Andrews this week and in a field lacking huge name superstars, he could be one to watch.
Experienced Scot Richie Ramsay is well versed on playing at the Old Course at St Andrews and he could well go well from the off here this week.
Top Ten Finish
With so many quality players assembled here at St Andrews, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:-
Brandon Stone has become one of the most consistent performers on the European Tour and the South African should bring his A game at St Andrews this weekend.
Englishman Paul Waring has no form to speak of but enjoys playing at St Andrews and could be one of the men to catch in favourable conditions this week.
Australian Wade Ormsby snuck into the top 10 at Wentworth last weekend for the BMW PGA Championship and he could go well again this week.
