A betting preview for the Porsche European Open which takes place at Green Eagle Golf Course from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th September 2019
Tournament Preview
Founded in 1978, the Porsche European Open has become one of the staple events on the European Tour, attracting some of the biggest names in golf. Historically, the event has been played in the UK but a move to Germany in 2015 saw a boost in sponsorship numbers and a bigger prize pot. With major championships on the back burner until April 2020, rankings points and tournament titles are the key prizes on offer for the biggest names in golf and there will be plenty of them in action in Germany this week.
Outright Winner
Whilst the course has a distinctly European feel, how each player adapts to the conditions is sure to have a huge bearing on the outcome at Green Eagle this week:-
World number nine Xander Schauffele came second last time out at the FedEx season ending championships and he will be the man to beat in Germany.
Likewise, Paul Casey enjoyed a late surge at East Lake – finishing 5th and the Englishman will be keen to get back in the winners enclosure after a barren spell.
2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed has become one of the most consistent players on the tour and the American will be looking for another win on the European Tour circuit here.
Enigmatic Slovakian Rory Sabbatini has enjoyed a terrific season across both the PGA and European Tours and he will be amongst the favourites here in a strong field in Germany.
Former European Ryder Cup player Andy Sullivan has endured a tough year on the European Tour but his talent is unquestionable and the course at Green Eagle should suit him.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Big-hitting Belgian Thomas Pieters picked up a tournament win in the Czech Republic last month and he will be keen to carry on his impressive form here on a course that should suit him.
2016 Porsche European Open champion Alexander Levy hasn’t enjoyed his best season but will be relishing a return to familiar conditions here in Germany.
2017 champion Jordan Smith announced himself to the world at this tournament two years ago and his form subsequently has been excellent.
Top Five Finish
With so many quality players assembled here at Green Ealge, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 5 come Sunday:-
With back to back top 10 finishes, young Austrian Matthias Schwab is one of the form men on the European Tour currently and he’ll be looking to burst out of the blocks here.
In-form Austrian Bernd Wiesberger is ranked 3rd in the European Tour Rankings following an excellent season. He will be looking to get off to a blistering start in familiar conditions here.
Despite not having much form to speak of, Ross Fisher is a previous winner of this event and his final round at the Omega European Masters last time out will give him confidence this week.
