Tournament Preview
…....
The Asian swing of the PGA Tour continues apace as the Chinese leg of the calendar gets under way in Shanghai. The competition is played at world famous Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai and hosts a prestigious field of 78 players. The top 50 players in the official world golf rankings are all scheduled to take part along with many Asian golfers that are looking to establish themselves outside of the Asian Tour. With the former winners including Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama and Ian Poulter; the prestige of the event almost speaks for itself and with over $10 million on the line too, there is plenty to play for in China this week.
Betting Preview - Outright Winner
Some of the biggest names on the PGA Tour feature here in China and they will be keen to get their hands on some silverware:-
Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy has lacked consistency once again in 2019 but with 17 PGA Tour career wins to his name, his reputation speaks for itself and he will be keen to pick up a win here in Shanghai.
2016 WGC HSBC champion Hideki Matsuyama comes into this event as one of the favourites following his impressive display at the Zozo Championships in Japan last week.
2017 champion Justin Rose has endured a season blighted by injury but he will be in contention to go deep this week if he plays anywhere near his best golf.
Last year’s runner up Tony Finau has gone from strength to strength on the PGA Tour and looks to have a game tailor made for the Sheshan Course here in Shanghai.
2019 Open Champion Shane Lowry hasn’t hit the heights many expected since his historic win at Royal Portrush and he will be keen to get back in the winners enclosure here.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Defending champion Xander Schauffele has enjoyed another solid season on the PGA Tour and he will be eager to get his defence of this trophy off to a flyer in Shanghai.
Four time major winner Jordan Spieth has slipped down the PGA rankings in 2019 but he is very capable at this level and has historically enjoyed playing in Asia.
Fiery Englishman Tyrrell Hatton is making a name for himself on the PGA Tour and he will be hoping to build on his 6th place finish at the CJ Cup a fortnight ago.
Top Ten Finish
With so many quality players assembled here in China, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:-
Tommy Fleetwood was edging his way back into form at the Zozo Championships in Japan last week and he could be a serious contender come next Sunday in Shanghai.
Australian Adam Scott has been a model of consistency once again this season on the PGA Tour and he will be relishing the opportunity to play some good golf in China.
Journeyman American Kevin Kisner tends to play his best golf on the biggest stages and with more than $10 million worth of prize money on offer, he looks exceptional value to be in the top 10 at the end of the week.
