The 2022/23 DSTV Premiership season gets under way on Friday night when Cape Town City host title holders Mamelodi Sundowns

Cape Town City
Although City started last season's DSTV Premiership slowly with just 1 win in their first 6 matches, they gained momentum as they went on and finished as runners up to Sundowns who had the title wrapped up very early. City went 13 games unbeaten in the second half of the campaign to secure second spot and they lost just the 1 league game at home throughout the campaign.
Transfer business has been pretty quiet so far for Eric Tinkler so continuity is the name of the game and they did contest the MTN8 final last season, losing to their opponents here on spot kicks.
Mamelodi Sundowns
Sundowns are bidding for a record sixth successive domestic league title. They dominated last season's title race and Peter Shalulile found the net 23 times in the DSTV Premiership and 30 in total. Downs not only cruised to the league title, finishing 16 points clear of City but also lifted the MTN8 and the Nedbank Cup.
On the transfer front Sundowns have recruited Bafana keeper Ronwen Williams from Supersport. They have also looked beyond South Africa for reinforcements including Chile international Marcelo Allende who was an expensive purchase.
Recent Head to Head
Sundowns needed spot kicks to take the MTN8 final last season after the scores finished level at 1-1 whilst both of the league meetings finished without a goal.
In 2020/21 Downs completed a double over City with 2-0 and 3-0 victories.

In the early betting Cape Town City are trading at around 27/10 to win the game with the draw at 41/20 and Sundowns can be backed at around 21/20

The Verdict
Sundowns have strengthened a squad that was already head and shoulders above their challengers and it would be no surprise to see them add another domestic title and give the CAF Champions League a real tilt.
For now the visitors can focus on all matters local and I fancy they can open their win account with a clan sheet to boot.
