BettingDiaryStage 18 of the Tour de France starts in Meribel and finishes in La Roche-sur-Foron covering a distance of 175 kilometres. We look at this stage from a betting angle.

Stage 17 Wrap

Stage 17 went very much according to the script we thought it would when a break got clear, but was kept on a fairly tight rein by Landa’s Bahrain-McLaren team. Unfortunately for them when it came down to the final climb in the last 4 kilometres Landa was unable to deliver, but we were treated to some brilliant man-on-man action with Astana’s Lopez eventually pulling clear to win the stage from Roglic who put further time into his rival Pogacar.

Roglic has shortened further in the Yellow Jersey race and Lopez has positioned himself well for a podium finish.

Stage 18 has plenty of climbing, but it doesn’t have a mountain top finish and we expect a strong break to go away, but watch out it may include teammates for some of the challengers to Roglic and we could yet get plenty of action for the Yellow Jersey.

Stage 18 Verdict

As the betting suggests this is wide open with any number of teams having more than one candidate to target a breakaway which would have every chance of sticking.

Although it tops out a long way from the finish the last climb is of the highest category so we will go with a specialist climber in the shape of Daniel Martinez. His team leader lost time in the GC yesterday and Martinez has already proved his worth by taking an earlier mountain stage.

Stage 18 Bet:

Daniel Martinez at 11/1
