Another marathon English Premier League season concludes on Sunday. Arsenal are assured of the title, one relegation place rests between West Ham and Spurs and qualification spots for European competitions next season are also up for grabs. Let’s take a look at the games and try and find some value plays on the final day.
Prices quoted are correct at the time of publication but subject to change.
Brighton v Man United
Brighton are currently seventh and in a Europa League qualification spot. They could finish as high as sixth with a win here which would guarantee Europa League and could even mean UCL football next season. A defeat for Brighton could see them sink as low as ninth and miss out on any European football next time around.
Unted can finish no higher than lower than their current third position, a feat which has earned Michel Carrirck the coaching job and there is no pressure on his side here.
I’m looking for a goalscorer anytime and there are a number of candidates on both sides but United’s Harry Maguire, who is most upset about being left out of England’s World Cup squad, might just pop up for Man Utd.
Bet: Anytime goalscorer Harry Maguire at 19/2
Burnley v Wolves
The bottom two meet here as Burnley with 21 points host Wolves with 19. They have managed just the 7 wins between them and one of Burnley’s four came at Wolves (3-2) in October. The draw looks as good an option as any to me and I’ll aim for 1-1.
Bet: Correct score 1-1 at 23/4
Crystal Palace v Arsenal
Palace are in fifteenth place and the result here will see them either stay where they are, move up one, or drop one. It’s worth noting that Palace meet Rayo in the final of the Conference League on Wednesday night in Leipzig and it would be understandable if they select a line up with that game in mind.
Arsenal’s 1-0 win at home to Burnley on Monday followed by Man City’s draw at Bournemouth on Tuesday means the Gunners are this season’s title winners. They also have the UCL final against PSG coming up on 30th May so as is the case with Palace, we could very well see a much changed line up.
The Gunners have been short of resources in some positions recently and won’t want to take too many chances so Myles Lewis Skelly should get a run out and hopefully he gets a goal.
Bet: Anytime goalscorer Myles Lewis Skelly at 19/2
Fulham v Newcastle
Fulham’s chances of qualifying for European football have all but gone and it remains to be seen if they will be able to hold on to the services of Marco Silva for next season. Newcastle have the same points as Fulham but even with a better goal difference their chances of Europe next season have also evaporated.
This is another correct score play where the dart has landed in the 1-1 box.
Bet: Correct Score 1-1 at 6/1
Liverpool v Brentford
Fifth placed Liverpool are 3 points behind Villa (who are fourth) and 3 better off than Bournemouth (who are sixth). A point will guarantee UCL football next season but a defeat would see them sweating on the result of the Forest v Bournemouth game.
Brentford have dropped to ninth, behind Chelsea on goal difference and just 1 point behind seventh placed Brighton so they are another side still in the mix for Europa League or Conference League qualification but they would need to better whatever result Chelsea achieve at Sunderland or take at last a point here and hope Brighton get thumped in their match.
Liverpool still have work to do and Mo Salah departs after this but Slot wouldn’t confirm whether he intends to start Salah in his press conference. Correct score time again, 2-1 Liverpool.
Bet: Correct score Liverpool to win 2-1 at 29/4
Man City v Aston Villa
City are guaranteed to finish in the runners up spot and they will have the EFL Cup and FA Cup to show for their efforts in what sounds as though it will be Guardiola’s last season in charge. Bernado Silva is another who will be departing and hopefully he gets himself on the scoresheet.
On Wednesday Villa won the Europa League Final, 3-0 against Freiburg. They had already guaranteed qualification for the UCL next season and that’s quite a turnaround for a side who failed to score a goal in their first 4 league games of the season. If Villa lose here and Liverpool win their game then Villa drop to fifth and that would mean the team who finishes sixth would also qualify for the UCL.
Bet: Anytime goalscorer Bernado Silva at 29/10 with Sportingbet
Notts Forest v Bournemouth
A turbulent season for Forest ended with stability, safe from the threat of relegation and a run to the Europa League semi finals. They can finish no lower than sixteenth and they were 8 unbeaten until they were edged out 3-2 at Man United last time out.
Bournemouth are sixth, 3 points behind Liverpool but with an inferior goal difference (+4 to +10). They are 17 unbeaten in the EPL and UCL qualification depends on either overhauling Liverpool and finishing fifth and securing sixth place (potentially by earning a point here) and hoping Villa finish fifth.
Rayan Vitor has proved to be a very astute Bournemouth signing and he is my goalscorer play.
Bet: Anytime goalscorer Rayan Vitor at 23/10 with Sportingbet
Sunderland v Chelsea
The team that finishes eighth will be in the Europa Conference League next season, Chelsea currently occupy that position but only due to a better goal difference than Brentford and their opponents here (Sunderland) are just 1 point adrift.
Sunderland really need to win and hope Brentford lose or draw and / or Brighton are beaten. Aside from Europe they are 2 points better off than Newcastle and finishing above their local rivals would mean plenty to the fans.
Chelsea pitched up against Spurs and could yet threaten the Europa League if they are 100% committed to this but either way I’m with Granit Xhaka to score for Sunderland.
Bet: Anytime goalscorer Granit Xhaka at 27/4 with Sportingbet
Spurs v Everton
The relegation picture is much more clear cut than the European qualification spots. Spurs need a draw to guarantee they finish above West Ham and stay in the top flight. They missed an opportunity to do just that when they lost their catch up game away to Chelsea on Tuesday and now it all hinges on the final day.
Everton were on course for European football until recently but 3 draws and 3 defeats in their last 6 has seen them slip into the lower half of the standings and out of contention.
I’m looking for Conor Gallagher to get what could be a priceless goal for Spurs.
Bet: Anytime goalscorer Conor Gallagher at 14/5 with Sportingbet
West Ham v Leeds
Spurs’ defeat at Chelsea in midweek was a stay of execution for West Ham. If they are to stay up they have to win this and hope Spurs lose at home to Everton. Any other scenario’s from the two games sees West Ham relegated to the Championship and the Hammers come into this on the back of 3 successive defeats.
Leeds are safe as houses but have remained focused and last week’s home win over Brighton extended their unbeaten run to 8 games and they are 3 points short of a half century.
I’m not at all convinced West Ham will win but I see goals and whilst Bowen will be a popular choice I like Mateus Fernades at a better price.
Bet: Anytime goalscorer Mateus Fernades at 19/4 with Sportingbet
