The PGA Tour Fall series gets underway this week with the brand-new Biltmore Championship, played for the very first time at the stunning The Cliffs at Walnut Cove in Asheville, North Carolina.
With the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup finale now behind us, focus shifts to the players on the outside looking in as they scramble to keep their tour cards for next season. The FedEx Cup Fall stretch of tournaments carries huge significance for anyone ranked outside the top 100 in the FedEx Cup standings, and that gives this event a very different feel to the summer’s marquee stops, smaller field, weaker top of the market, and every shot counting for those chasing status. A fresh venue, a wide-open field and plenty at stake makes for a fascinating week.
Course
The Cliffs at Walnut Cove is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains just outside Asheville, and it is regarded as one of Nicklaus’ finest mountain designs. It is a private course that plays to a par 71 of just under 7,400 yards ( 6766 meters) and features dramatic elevation changes, tree-lined fairways and small, sloping bent-grass greens that will demand real precision from the field. With no previous editions of this tournament to draw on, course knowledge is essentially a level playing field, but players who are comfortable adjusting to significant elevation changes, hitting off uneven lies and controlling their approach shots from awkward angles should have a clear edge. Expect strong short-game players and accurate iron players to fare well, and I predict a winning score somewhere in the mid-to-low teens under par for the week.

This is one of the more open markets we’ve seen on the PGA Tour all year, with none of the true superstars in the field this week. Duke amateur star Jackson Koivun heads the board at 13.00 as he makes his highly anticipated professional debut, followed by Jacob Bridgeman at 19.00 off the back of a strong FedEx Cup Playoff run. Ben James, Doug Ghim and Davis Thompson are all bunched together at 26.00, with J.T. Poston at 29.00 rounding out the top of the market. With a first-time venue and a much weaker field than usual, there is a genuine mountain of value to be found further down the board for those willing to dig into the numbers.

Jacob Bridgeman at 19.00
Bridgeman returns to tournament golf this week after a two-week break, and he arrives in great form. He finished the FedEx Cup Playoffs with a run of very strong results, including a 9th at the BMW Championship, followed by a 4th place finish at the Tour Championship the following week. It has been a superb season overall for the American, who made it all the way to East Lake as well as picking up his maiden PGA Tour victory earlier in the year. In what is a noticeably weaker field this week, and with confidence sky-high after his East Lake result, we really like him at 19.00.

Marco Penge at 31.00.
Marco Penge is returning to the PGA Tour after playing two tournaments on the DP World Tour. His FedEx Cup playoff run ended after the Wyndham Championship, where he finished 38th and was not able to progress. However, he did put together two solid performances across the pond in the weeks that followed. His first stop was the British Masters, where he was able to finish in 6th place. He then followed it up with a top 20 at the Omega European Masters. With that recent form and a wide-open field this week, we think he stands a very good chance at 31.00.

Rasmus Hojgaard at 29.00
Hojgaard has had some very solid results over the last two months, and he returns to the PGA Tour this weekend after a short stint on the DP World Tour. In his last five starts he has recorded a fourth-place finish at the Rocket Classic, a runner-up at his home tournament (the Danish Golf Championship), and an eleventh-place finish at the Omega European Masters. With that consistent run of form, we think he stands a very good chance this week at 29.00.
