On we go with our take on all 12 races and we have graded each bet from 1 unit (nibble) to 3 units (being the most confident play). Note also sometimes we go win only and in other races we take 2 places (e.g. run in the first 2), 3 places (run in the first 3) or even 4 places (run in the first 4).

Note, odds quoted are correct at the time of writing but are subject to change

11:45 - Race 1 - Greentube Class 4 - 1600m

A Class 4 handicap to kick off a marathon day in the saddle. Likely favourite Sommerstern is in good form, won on provincial debut and now tries the polytrack. United Front was put up by Southpaw on our video preview and July Day thread on our discussion forum and whilst he comes with a whole page of issues he could play a big role if things fall right. We will also go with a small place bet on No 7 Dylan’s Champ for the Candice Bass yard. This one has plenty to find with the aforementioned runners but if recapturing anything like his best form he would be bang there in this grade.

Bets: 2 units win United Front at 5/1

1 unit 3 places Dylans Champ at 9/2

12:25 - Race 2 - Tote B Stakes - 1600m

A competitive looking handicap again on the poly. Diani is an old favourite of mine and has a solid record on this surface. He has often run creditably at a level above this without really threatening to end a winless sequence which now spans all of 594 days. Fear not as the merit rating has started in more recent times and this 6yo could run into the first 3.

There are chances pretty much everywhere you look but another to consider is Bru, a 1 time winner from 10 starts who has also run behind some top sorts. He could be a factor if a gelding operation in April has had the desired effect, possibly even getting in the winners box so win and 3 places on this one for us.

Bets: 2 units win Bru at 14.29/1

2 units 3 places Bru at 3.14/1

1 unit 3 places Diani at 36/10

13:05 - Race 3 - Magical Zulu Kingdom 2200 (Grade 3) - 2200m

This is the “consolation” for those who didn’t get into the Durban July. It was won last year by Otto Luyken who is back for another crack and given his merit rating is 1 point lower than last year and Richard Fourie takes the ride, he has to be considered.

Bet: 2 units win Otto Luyken at 8.33/1

2 units 3 places Otto Luyken at 16/10

13:40 - Race 4 - Durban Gold Vase (Grade 3) - 3000m

A marathon trip for these stayers and the first leg of a Pick 6 pool which could reach R15 million. Ahead Of The Facts ran third in this race last year and now as a 4yo has 8kg more to shoulder. Holding Thumbs was second in the same race and is more favourably weighted based on that run but he disappointed last time out. Shoot The Rapids is consistent and veteran Master Redoute could figure if at best. Note that Curious Girl is a scratching as she will now line up in the July and in her absence preference is for Shoot The Rapids.

Bet: 3 units win Shoot The Rapids at 2.86/1

14:20 - Race 5 - Amusenet Golden Slipper (Grade 2) - 1400m

The first of the two juvenile features and this one is for the fillies. A formline featuring a number of these over course and distance from the 6th June suggests the winner that day Alice B Toklas is aa worthy favourite although the runner up No 3 Royal Tiara didn’t settle that day and is better drawn this time around. We fancy she will finish in the first two and could even win.

Bet: 3 units 2 places Royal Tiara at 15/10

15:00 - Race 6 - Omoda Golden Horseshoe (Grade 2) - 1400m

A field of 2yo colts and geldings plus one filly line up with Vibe Check your likely favourite from stall 1. He could be hard to beat but we are siding with No 7 Red Spice to run in the first two places. He has had one run at Greyville and did well to run third caught wide from a draw of 11. He should be better for that experience and whilst he has a winning chance a more conservative play is again to go for a top two finish

Bet: 3 units 2 places Red Spice at 1.85/1

16:00 - RACE 7 - HOLLYWOODBETS DURBAN JULY (GRADE 1) - 2200m

In this race 12 months ago Native Ruler finished sixth beaten a tad less than 4 lengths. His merit rating is 2 points higher than it was in July 2025 when he jumped from Gate 18 but the two prep runs this year seem to have gone better. Drawn at 10 this year in a field which in our opinion is not as strong this time around and with Keagen de Melo in the irons, Native Ruler can be a factor at an attractive price. The more conservative punter may wish to consider playing a fixed odds place (to finish in the first 4).

Bets: 2 Units win Native Ruler to win at 14.29/1

2 Units 4 places Native Ruler at 2.14/1

Durban July Boxed Trifecta:

There are 60 possible combinations in our perm of 5 horses so to play for a full dividend you would need to spend R60. However you can play “fractional betting” taking a % of the dividend in accordance with your budget. For example 50% would cost R30 etc.. Remember we are aiming to get the first 3 past the post from any combination of these 5 runners.

9 Viva’s Liberte, lightly raced, light mass to carry and leading jockey Craig Zackey on board. Has been finding betting support

10 Native Ruler, our headline fixed odds bet so obviously must go in our trifecta perm too

11 Note to Self, Richard Fourie in the irons, difficult to leave out

12 Zeitz, improving gelding who likes Greyville, needs to prove stamina but a player if he gets the trip

13 Mocha Blend, only seen out twice since winning the Summer Cup and those runs over distances way short of ideal were preps, hopefully for a big show here.

1 Unit Boxed trifecta perm. 9,10,11,12 and 13. Cost is R60 for a full dividend.

17:00 - Race 8 - Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes (Grade 1) - 1600m

Another Grade 1 contest, this time over the mile for fillies and mares and we have an odds on favourite in the shape of No 10. Double Grand Slam who won this race last year under today’s jockey Andrew Fortune. The favourite has an awkward draw of 10 and if you want to play to beat her then there is little to separate last years runner up No 6 Mon Petit Cherie and the local star No 7 Quickstepgal and those two in swingers on the tote (both must run in the first 3) is our play.

Bet: 1 Unit Swingers 6 and 7

17:40 - Race 9 - Post Merchants (Grade 3) - 1200m

Over to the speed machines for this Grade 3 sprint and although we have 14 of them there is a warm favourite in the shape of Buffalo Storm Cody who finished a close fourth in this race 12 months before winning a Grade 1 over course and distance a few weeks later. A more attractively priced proposition is Café Culture, a course and distance winner who’s last two runs were very decent despite reportedly coughing. A draw is 13 could have been way kinder but with luck in running he has an each way shout.

Bets: 1 unit win Cafe Culture at 16.67/1

2 units 4 places Café Culture at 2/1

18:20 - Race 10 - Premier Gateway International (Listed) - 1600m

This competitive listed handicap over the mile is an open looking contest and at the time of writing the bookmakers were going 5/1 the field. There are many you can make a case for and we will take our chances with No 3 Better Man. This 3 year old still has scope for improvement after just 11 runs. Last time out in his second start in KZN he finished like a train from a wide draw at Scottsville. He is better drawn today at 3 and weighted to turn placings around with a couple of rivals that finished in front of him. Regular pilot de Melo is in the irons and he looks set to go well.

Bets: 3 Units win Better Man at 10/1

3 Units 3 places Better Man at 21/10

19:00 - Race 11 - Race Coast Middle Stakes - 1200m

Back on the poly and this looks wide open. We will have a win and 4 places nibble Serengeti Sun who is well drawn and unexposed but needs to prove she handles the surface

Bets: 1 Unit win Serengeti Sun at 8.33/1

1 Unit 3 places Serengeti Sun at 17/10

19:40 - Race 12 - Metro FM Class 4 - 1200m

The very likeable and largely consistent Poursomesugaronme is our last wager for the day to a conservative win and place stake. This 4 time winner on the ploy is drawn in the 1 gate and rarely runs a bad race.

Thanks for staying with us and we hope you have had an enjoyable day’s racing and a few winning bets.

Bets: 1 Unit win Poursomesugaronme at 12.5/1

1 Unit 4 places Poursomesugaronme at 1.62/1
