The Investec Champions Cup kicks off this weekend, with 24 teams beginning their push toward the last 16 in what is widely considered the premier club rugby competition in the world. With elite sides from the URC, Premiership and Top 14 all involved, Round 1 promises a stacked schedule and plenty of betting angles.

This blog will track all things betting related throughout the weekend including handicaps, points lines, weather angles, market moves, and of course any suggested bets as they arise. If anything stands out in the EPCR Challenge Cup, those plays will also be added.

Fixtures, team news and early lines will be updated as soon as bookmakers price up the markets. As always, weather, travel and squad rotation will play a big part in shaping the betting opportunities.

BET: Toulouse v Sharks

Posted 07 Dec 16h17

3 units Toulouse Over 58.5 points at 17/20 at BetXchange

This handicap opened at -26.5 and has now blown out to -48.5 Toulouse. The points line is 70.5. The Sharks have struggled all season and have named a very experimental side that should be put to the sword.

I was hoping for a price on Toulouse tries overs, but none of my bookies are offering it, so I’ll take the Toulouse team total over 58.5 at BetXchange.

I’m not getting involved in the Gloucester v Castres game, but if pushed I would lean under 54.5.

I may still have something on Edinburgh v Toulon, but that will depend on at least one of my two Sunday bets landing.

BET: Section Paloise v Northampton Saints

Posted 7 Dec 11h12

3 units Saints Over 32.5 points at 19/20 at Hollywoodbets

Saints are currently -6.5, with some support for them over the last 24 hours as the line has moved out a point. The total points line sits at 57.5, and conditions look likely to be overcast but dry.

I like the look of this Saints side and am leaning their way on the handicap, but I prefer the team-total overs at 32.5 as the main play.

How Big Is Big Enough?

Posted 07 Dec 11h04

Bordeaux did the business for me at Loftus, and I’m pleased I never got involved in the late games as I would have given most, if not all, of it back.

There are four Champions Cup games on Sunday, and the big talking point is Toulouse v Sharks. The question really is: “How big is big enough?”

The handicap, which opened at -26, has now blown out to as big as -48.5, and it’s getting to the stage where it’s more about mathematics than match analysis.

Latest caps and points lines are below, with some bets to follow.

Section Paloise +6.5 v Northampton Saints, Points 58.5
Toulouse -46.5 v Sharks, Points 69.5
Gloucester -5.5 v Castres, Points 54.5
Edinburgh +5.5 v Toulon, Points 48.5

Shutting up shop till Sunday

Posted 06 Nov 16h49

Heading out tonight so won't be able to watch any rugby past the Bulls game.

The only bet I am considering is Leinster -34.5 at 19/20 and I will play that if Bordeaux arrive.

I will be back in the morning with a look at Sundays games

Saturday Strategy

Posted 06 Dec 07h18
After a slow start with the Stormers proving too strong for Bayonne last night, the Bordeaux points bet is likely to dictate my day.

I’m off to my mom-in-law’s birthday breakfast now, and I’ll likely have a bet in the Lions v Benetton Challenge Cup game at 15h00 and I’ll post if I do.

I’m going to swerve the Saracens v Clermont clash and will  get involved in at least two of the four later matches, especially if Bordeaux arrive.

BET: Bulls v Bordeaux

Posted 06 Dec 07h04
5 units Bordeaux over 29.5 points at 17/20 at Hollywoodbets
1 unit HT/FT Bordeaux/Bulls at 5.2/1 at Betxchange

Bordeaux opened slight favourites at -2.5 but the Bulls have replaced them and are now narrow favourites at -2.5. The points line opened at 59.5 and has since moved to 62.5. I’m a bit annoyed I didn’t take the early line as I had been lining it up for a while.

Conditions should be good and when these sides met in January 2024, there were 86 points in the match. I think we get another high-scoring fixture here but my preference is for Bordeaux points. They have a stacked team and should come out firing. The Bulls bench is also loaded with impact, which opens up the possibility of a momentum swing in the second half.

That makes the Bordeaux to lead at halftime with the Bulls to win the match HT/FT option worth an interest at 5.2/1.

Friday Night Update

The Stormers have shifted back into slight favouritism in what remains virtually a choice game. The total points line has also climbed from 42.5 to 45.5, but I’m sticking with my earlier play on Bayonne to win and over 42.5.

In the other Friday fixture, Sale are trading between +3.5 and +5.5 against Glasgow, with a points line of 39.5. I won’t be getting involved there and am happy to watch that one from the sidelines.

Handicap Movers

Toulouse -36.5 → -44.5 (8-point swing toward Toulouse)

BET: Bayonne v Stormers

Posted 05 Dec 07h56

2 units Bayonne win & Over 42.5 points at 2.35/1 at BetXchange

The Stormers opened slight favourites at -2.5 after their brilliant come-from-behind win at Munster in the URC. However, support quickly came for Bayonne and they were backed into -2.5, before team news saw the market settle at a virtual choice game.

I am firmly in the Bayonne camp. While neither side is at full strength, Bayonne are traditionally strong at home and I believe they can get the job done. I also have doubts about how focused the Stormers will be on the Champions Cup, given the excellent start they've made in the URC and how draining competing on both fronts can be.

Bayonne are 10/11 to win outright, but I’m inflating the price by adding Over 42.5 points, bringing the bet to 2.35/1.

There is rain around, but it looks like it could clear before kick-off. Before Bayonne’s last home match against Lyon , which produced exactly 42 points, their previous 11  games home and away had all exceeded this mark so as long as conditions are not biblical, this total is reachable.
