Round 15 of the United Rugby Championship is upon us and in this blog we will keep an eye on all things betting related and any bets placed will be posted as the week unwinds.

Model Testing

I am testing a rugby betting model for a member of the Goodforthegame community. The aim of my testing is to improve the model and early indications are it has potential although should not be followed religiously yet.

In some cases I will follow the models picks and in others go with my own while sharing the models  predictions.

Max Bet will be 5 units.

Bet: Lions v Glasgow

Posted 18 April 10h16

1.5 units (1-5) Glasgow win at 24/10 and 0.5 units HT/FT Lions/Glasgow at 10/1 at Betxchange

The Lions are -7.5 with total points at 56.5.

Lets start with the latter. The sun is out in Joburg as I write this but there has been quite a bit of rain about this week. Still I am leaning overs.

Glasgow are not at full strength but they still have a decent team and have loaded the bench. To me this game is too important in terms of their season to sacrifice and I think they will be up for it. I am having an interest on the win but also the Lions/Glasgow HT/FT in the hope their bench delivers.

Bet: Stormers v Connacht

Posted 18 April 10h03

0.5 units (1-5) Stormers last try scorer Simelane at 16/1 at Pokerbet

The Stormers are -21.5 and the points line is 53.5. I was eyeing an overs play but there was alot of rain yesterday and some light rain today. The model reckons points and handicap are about right and I agree so rather than force a play I am going to have an interest on Simelane scoring the final Stormers try off the bench.

Betting Update

Posted 18 April 08h59

It was a mixed bag for me last night but my bigger play unders in Ulster lost by a  point - those last 2 conversions from the touch line were killers.

Here is the latest betting and I will be back with bets in the 3 games involving the SA teams and possibly a play in the Scarlets game.

Stormers -21.5 v Connacht Rugby, Points 53.5
Lions -7.5 v Glasgow Warriors, Points 56.5
Scarlets -1.5 v Cardiff Rugby, Points 48.5
Ospreys +1.5 v Sharks, Points 49.5
Benetton +3.5 v Munster, Points 47.5

Friday Night Bets

Posted 17 April 09h04

All 3 of Friday nights games kick off at the same time – I find it hard to believe that this can be allowed.

What this means is that I am focusing on the Dragons v Bulls game and will let the model guide me on the other 2 games.

Ulster v Leinster

Ulster were backed from -1.5 to -5.5 on the back of team news.

The total points line is 49.5 and there is quite a bit or rain about in the day although it might clear. The model is strong on the under 49.5 and the last 2 meetings at Ulster would have delivered profits for unders backers with 4 of the last 5 going under at all venues.

I agree with the model here.

BET: 2.5 units (1-5) under 49.5 points at 0.89/1 at Pokerbet

Edinburgh v Zebre

Edinburgh are -18.5 and the points line is 51.5 with conditions expected to be ok after some rain earlier in the day.

The model likes the unders here and also Zebre plus to a lesser extent but I am going to sit this one out.

Dragons v Bulls

The Bulls have been backed from -11.5 to -14.5 and the points line is 47.5 with conditions likely to be cool with some rain.

The Dragons are missing a few players but the model fancies the plus and the unders.

I agree on the unders but prefer to focus on the Dragons

BET: 2 units (1-5) Dragons under 16.5 points at 9/10 at Pokerbet

Round 15 handicaps and Models early leans

Posted 14 April 09h05

Below are the handicaps currently on offer and the models early leans - I missed the really early lines but I think the model forecast a few of the moves

Dragons +11.5 v Bulls
Edinburgh -17.5 v Zebre - marginal lean Zebre +
Ulster -1.5 v Leinster
Stormers -20.5 v Connacht - marginal lean Connacht +
Lions -8.5 v Glasgow Warriors
Scarlets -0.5 v Cardiff Rugby - marginal lean Scarlets -
Ospreys +1.5 v Sharks
Benetton +1.5 v Munster - marginal lean Benetton plus

LEAGUE TABLE & OUTRIGHT BETTING UPDATE

With just three rounds remaining after this weekend and the top eight teams qualifying for the playoffs, the URC season is entering a critical phase both at the top and around the cutoff line.

At the summit, the Glasgow Warriors (55 pts) and DHL Stormers (51 pts) have created a gap and are well positioned for home quarter-finals. In the outright market, Glasgow are priced at 29/10 and the Stormers at 49/10.

Ulster (47 pts) and Leinster (46 pts) round out the top four, with Leinster still installed as favourites at 1/1, despite sitting 4th, underlining the respect the market has for their squad depth and playoff pedigree. Ulster are available at 14/1.

The battle for the remaining playoff spots is extremely tight. The Lions (43 pts and 55/2)) occupy 5th, with Cardiff (41 pts, 149/1) and Munster (41 pts, 12/1) just behind, while the Bulls (40 pts. Just under 7/1) currently hold the final qualifying position in 8th.

Crucially, Connacht (39 pts) are just one point outside the top eight and very much in the mix, with the market giving them a distant 65/1 shot.

Outside the playoff positions, the Sharks (33 pts) face an uphill battle to qualify, currently priced at 35/2, while teams further down the standings are effectively out of contention.

With so little separating the teams around the playoff line, every point  and particularly bonus points will be vital over the closing rounds.
