The United Rugby Championship returns this coming weekend with Round 7, and in this blog, we will cover all things betting related including early betting, handicap moves, weather, team lineups and ultimately our bets.
Bet: Dragons RFC v Connacht Rugby
Posted 20 Dec 19h14
3 units Under 45.5 points at 0.89/1 (BetXchange)
The Dragons opened at +6.5 and have since drifted to +9.5. The points line, however, has been stable at 45.5.
Conditions are expected to be wet and windy, which should make attacking rugby difficult and place a premium on territory and set piece. That suits another lower-scoring contest, and I’m happy to bring the curtain down on Round 7 with one more unders play.
Bet: Ospreys v Munster
Posted 20 Dec 09h17
4 units Under 47.5 points at 0.99/1 (BetXchange)
After opening with Ospreys at +3.5, this handicap has now settled exactly where I forecast it at +5.5. There is no real value for me on the handicap at this stage, but I do like the Under 47.5 and this is my biggest play of the day.
This total would have landed in the last three meetings between the sides, including the last two hosted by Ospreys. Conditions are also expected to be unpleasant, with rain and wind in the forecast, which should further favour a lower-scoring contest.
All things considered, the unders is the standout angle for me here.
Bet: Hollywoodbets Sharks v Vodacom Bulls
Posted 20 Dec 09h08
3 units Under 47.5 points at 0.94/1 (BetXchange)
The Sharks opened as -1.5 favourites, but the market has swung and the Bulls are now trading at -1.5. Both sides have been struggling for form, although the Sharks will have taken plenty of confidence from their win over Saracens in Durban last weekend.
This has the feel of a proper arm wrestle. While I would have preferred a couple of extra points on the total, at this time of year in Durban, I am generally inclined to look for unders.
The under would have landed in three of the last four meetings in Durban, and with both teams likely to prioritise physicality and territory, I’m happy to side with a lower-scoring contest here in what will hopefully be muggy conditions.
Bet: Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh Rugby
Posted 20 Dec 09h01
3 units Under 46.5 points at 0.92/1 (BetXchange)
This line opened at Glasgow -8.5, which is where I had it priced, but there has been steady support for the home side and it now sits at -11.5.
The total points line is 46.5 and this has historically been a low-scoring fixture. Conditions are expected to be clear but cold, with some humidity, which should favour defences and set-piece control rather than expansive play.
I’m following The Admiral on the unders here and expect another tight, attritional Glasgow–Edinburgh battle.
Bet: Stormers v Lions
Posted 20 Dec 08h49
3 units Under 52.5 points at 9/10 (PokerBet)
This handicap opened at Stormers -13.5 and has since pushed out to -15.5. The points line sits at 52.5, but much of the pre-match discussion has centred on the condition of the pitch.
The surface was used for motocross last week and Stormers coach John Dobson has described it as resembling a cricket pitch and he is not a happy camper. With some wind also expected, kicking conditions may be challenging.
Taking all of that into account, I am siding with the unders in what could turn say into a stop-start, attritional contest.
I am not having a bet in Benetton v Zebre which overlaps with the Stormers and Glasgow games but the cap is Benetton -12.5 and the points line is 46.5.
It looks an unders kind of day
Posted 20 Dec 08h36
The weekend got off to a decent start with unders arriving in Leinster v Ulster but the -12 missed in Cardiff v Scarlets - what the Cardiff player was thinking with that cross kick after the hooter he alone will know.
The Admiral mentioned he liked unders in a lot of games this week and I am in agreement. Bets to follow.
Bet: Leinster v Ulster
Posted 19 Dec 07h09
4 units Under 49.5 points at 0.93/1 (BetXchange)
I handicapped this game at Leinster -15.5. The line opened at -12.5 and has since tightened to -9.5 after Leinster mixed things up slightly with their team announcement. In theory I should be on Leinster but they just don't instill confidence at the moment.
The sentiment on last night’s show, which included a Leinster supporter and a neutral conveniently wearing a Leinster jersey, was that Ulster are big runners. However, The Admiral was particularly bullish on the unders at 49.5.
Conditions are expected to be cold but clear and this has the look of a proper arm wrestle. Leinster remain an excellent defensive side but are not scoring as freely as they once were, which hopefully points to an unders match.
For those looking for something more speculative, the Half-Time/Full-Time market is interesting. Ulster/Leinster is trading at 21/4 at Sportingbet. Leinster have named a stacked bench, which may be needed to get them over the line in the second half although in truth I would have preferred around 6/1 which I saw while hosting The Handicap on Thursday.
Bet: Cardiff Rugby v Scarlets
Posted 19 Dec 06h48
2 units Cardiff win & Under 46.5 points at 33/20 (Hollywoodbets)
I handicapped this match at Cardiff -8.5 and the market has been pretty stable all week around -7.5.
Both guests on last night’s show gave the Scarlets a fighting chance, and I did consider Cardiff to win by 1–12 points at 29/20. The total points line sits at 46.5 and the unders would have landed in the last two meetings between these sides.
Conditions are expected to be cold and clear, but humidity is well into the 90s, which could make handling tricky. That and recent history pushes me towards a lower-scoring contest.
I don’t want to get too involved here, so a small play on the home side to win a tight, low-scoring game is the approach.
