bafanaSouth Africa take on Cape Verde in the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday and the bookmakers are struggling to name a favourite

Earlier on Saturday Mali take on Ivory Coast, how the hosts are still in the tournament is a story in itself but they are favourites to win in regulation time at 5/2 with the draw at 1.95/1 and Mali are trading at 2.55/1. If pushed for a pick I would suggest the draw.

On to South Africa's clash with Cape Verde it's worth mentioning the BoyleSports Price Boost …..... …...... SA to win v Cape Verde & over 2.5 match goals | Was 7.90 now boosted to 9.00

Cape Verde

Cape Verde booked their quarter final ticket with a 1-0 win over Mauritania on Monday thanks to a very late penalty from captain Ryan Mendes. It wasn't convincing but they made it through.

Cape Verde topped Group B, unbeaten with 2 wins and 1 draw to finish 4 points clear of Egypt and Ghana and Mozambique (2 points each) were eliminated. They began with a 2-1 win over Ghana and a 3-0 win over Mozambique and before a 2-2 draw with Egypt they were already assured of a last 16 spot.

South Africa

A day after Cape Verde had beaten Mauritania South Africa came up against Morocco who at the time were the outright favourites to win the tournament. Bafana pulled off the latest of a number of upset results in this tournament with a 2-0 win thanks to a second half goal from Makgopa and after Morocco missed an 85th minute penalty and had a man sent off Teboho Mokoena sealed the deal with a quality free kick in injury time.

Bafana were runners to Mali in Group E with 1 win, 1 draw and 1 defeat against their name. Mali finished with 5 points, Bafana and Namibia both had 4 and Tunisia with 2 went home early.

After missing a penalty and losing their opening match 2-0 to Mali Bafana put themselves on the board in some style in their second outing with a 4-0 win over Namibia. Bafana still had work to do to secure a last 16 spot when they took on Tunisia in their final group match, the game ended without a goal and that was enough.

The winner of this tie will face off with either Nigeria or Angola in semi's.

The Betting

Cape Verde are currently trading at around 1.75/1 to win the game with the draw at 1.95/1 and South Africa are priced at around 1.84/1

A game of 3 goals or more in total is priced at 1.73/1 and it's 1.22/1 for both teams to score.

Verdict:

Bafana have kept 3 clean sheets in a row and have grown into the tournament after a losing their opening group match.

Cape Verde are unbeaten and are clearly no mugs but they battled for long periods against Mauritania and Bafana get my vote to edge this one 1-0.
