Round 3 treated us well with the treble cruising in. Wellington also delivered the HT/FT speculative play whilst Ash Dixon got us our meat pie yet in so doing unfortunately cost us a second HT/FT call as Hawkes Bay got past Canterbury at the death. Let’s dive into Round 4 and see what catches the eye this week.

Northland vs Taranaki – Saturday 03 Oct @ 05:35, Northland

The Naki were brought back down to earth by Otago in Round 3. One could be tempted to writing Taranaki off after their first display without the Barrett’s in their ranks but I believe they still have enough quality in their midst to bounce right back this week.

Canterbury vs Wellington – Saturday @ 08:05, Christchurch

Three matches in and Canterbury have stuttered out of the blocks with two defeats (both by a single point). The bookies continue to have healthy respect for the pedigree of the men from Christchurch but it’s tough looking past the value offered for a Wellington win in this one.

After bending the knee against Waikato in the opener, the Lions have found their mojo with good victories over Auckland and Bay of Plenty. The visitors have big names of their own in their line-up and they won’t be taking a step back against their illustrious hosts. I’ll be backing Du’Plessis Kirifi to disrupt up front and the likes of Umaga-Jensen to tear it up at the back.

North Harbour vs Tasman – Sunday 04 Oct @ 03:05, North Harbour

I’ve been steering clear of backing the mighty Mako thus far but this week seems the right time to change tactics. Even without their All Blacks this is an impressive looking outfit – their back three must be the envy of the competition. North Harbour have proven plucky, but I don’t see them able to mix it with the big dogs on Sunday.

Southland vs Waikato – Sunday 04 Oct @ 03:05, Northland

In the first three Rounds of Mitre 10 Southland have managed 16, 14 and 11 points. Yet this has delivered two victories and a 3-point loss. The Stags definitely know how to roll up their sleeves and put up a fight. This week there should again be wet weather around which should suit this scrapping style of theirs. That being said, Southland are yet to meet a team of the calibre of Waikato. I think the visitors will have the necessary skill and firepower to take care of business and finally hand the men from the south a decent beating.
