Let’s take a look at the weekend fixtures for Round 1 of the NRL.

NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS vs GOLD COAST TITANS – Sat 13 Mar @ 06:00, Central Coast

The Warriors have traded two big ball carrying props as they lose Blair but gain Manly’s Fonua-Blake. Tuivasa-Scheck will be there at the back for the Kiwi side but new recruits, Fifita and Fa'asuamaleaui join Proctor in a strong back row for the visitors. Young sensation AJ Brimson and experienced veteran, Anthony Don will be waiting their turn to get put the finishing touches on any chances that come the way of the Titans.

SYDNEY ROOSTERS vs MANLY SEA EAGLES – Sat 13 Mar @ 08:30, Sydney

The Roosters had a disappointing season by their standards in 2020 finishing fourth on the log. I feel this Chooks side is getting a touch long in the tooth but they should have the beating of a Sea Eagles outfit who ended 2020 with a whimper and will again miss Tommy Turbo in a big way at the start of the season.

PENRITH PANTHERS vs NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS – Sat 13 Mar @ 10:35, Penrith

The Panthers take to the field as the Minor Premiers, but not the ones who drank from the Premiership trophy in the end. Penrith had a sparkling season only suffering defeat on one occasion from their 20 regular season matches. North Queensland still have tireless power in Taumalolo and Coen Hess as well as exciting outside backs like Val Holmes and Tabuai-Fidow. If this Cowboys outfit get it right they can beat anyone on their day. One struggles to see the Panthers being anywhere near as dominant as last season but losing against a team who finished low down in 2020 has to be a step too far to fall right out the gate in 2021. Look out for Fisher-Harris to add to his considerable carry meters for the men in black.

CANBERRA RAIDERS vs WEST TIGERS – Sun 14 Mar @ 07:05, Canberra

The Raiders were way to inconsistent last year to be part of the Top 4. The Tigers are still a team looking to find their identity whilst their opponents on the day have established stars like Nicoll-Klokstad, Jack Wighton and George Williams in their ranks.

ST GEORGE DRAGONS vs CRONULLA SHARKS – Sun 14 Mar @ 09:15, Sydney

The Sharks spent 2020 dishing out defeats to the bottom half of the table but failing against those above them on the log. At the start of this campaign they will be fancied to beat a Dragons side in a rebuilding phase but will have to do so without their influential playmaker, Shaun Johnson. If these Cronulla boys lose a player or two it could turn into a very tough season for them but early doors they should get past the Dragons.
