BettingDiaryWe take a look at the second weekend of Six Nations Rugby action and suggest a bet in each game.

Let’s start with a look at the Outright Betting where France have firmed slightly to 5/4 favourites (from 15/10) with the big movers, Ireland available at 3/1 last week now in at 7/4. England have drifted from around the 3/1 mark to 6/1 while Scotland have come in from 9/1 to also to 6/1. Wales and Italy are now the rank outsiders at 55/1 and 1000/1.

SATURDAY

WALES v SCOTLAND

Wales conceded an early try against Ireland in Dublin last week and although they hung in contention for the balance of the first half it was the Irish that put them away in the second half to win 29-7. Wales never really threatened the Irish line until an intercept try saw them grab a 7 pointer and their fans will be looking for them to improve their attack this week against the Scots.

Scotland started marginal underdogs at home to England and despite being under the whip for long periods in the game, they managed to beat the English 27-17 helped somewhat by the English red card which also led to a penalty try.

The Scots have really improved in recent years and if they can beat the Welsh in Cardiff that 6/1 about them winning the Tournament is going to start looking attractive. Of course you will have to have taken the 6/1 before they beat Wales because the price will no doubt shorten after that.

Wales 11/8

Draw 22/1

Scotland 15/20

Handicap: Wales (+2.5)

Suggested Bet: Wales win at 11/8

Wales are always a different side at home and I am expecting a tense and close battle between these two old rivals. For me the value lies in the home team for the win.

FRANCE v IRELAND

This is without doubt the clash of the weekend and many will feel that the Six Nations could be decided in Paris on Saturday night.

The French never really moved through the gears in beating Italy 37-10 at home last weekend. The handicap for the match was France (-33.5) so had you backed Italy on the handicap, you would have won your bet despite them taking a big beating in the match.

Ireland put on the most impressive display, bar perhaps Scotland, of the week when they beat Wales 29-7 at home last weekend. The first half was one of wearing the Welsh down before they comfortably put them away in the second half.

These sides last met in Paris in the Six Nations in 2020 with the French winning a surprisingly high scoring encounter 35-27.

France 5/10

Draw 22/1

Ireland 21/20

Handicap: France (-4.5)

Suggested Bet: Winning Margin, France by under 12.5 points at 15/10

I can’t see anything but this being a close game and while I am favouring the French to win I can’t see them running away with it.

SUNDAY

ITALY v ENGLAND

Italy performed above expectations last week despite losing against the French, well in the eyes of the bookmakers in any case they looked quite good in patches, but have a tough task now on their hands now at home to the English who would have been stung by their 30 point defeat to the Scots.

The handicap opened (-21.5), but there has been money for the English with the line currently sitting at (-25.5). England’s last three matches in Rome have seen them win by 29, 31 and 31 points respectively.

Italy 20/1

Draw 80/1

England 1/50

Handicap: Italy (+25.5)

Suggested Bet: Handicap, England (-25.5) at 19/20.

I think the money is spot on here for me the handicap is still not set big enough for England to bounce back strongly and put away an Italian side that just lacks the talent to compete at this level.
