lionst20The first action in the Momentum One Day Cup this week is a televised clash between the Lions and the WSB Cape Cobras at the Wanderers, Johannesburg on Thursday.

Lions:

The Lions have won just 1 of their first 6 matches, another 3 have ended in defeat and no result was possible in the other 2 and they are fourth in the standings with 8 log points. Last time out they went down by 7 runs away to the Warriors in East London, falling short of a victory target revised down from 309 after a rain delay with the Lions innings ending on 276/9 (Hendricks 116 not out).

The Lions did win their most recent home game where they completed an impressive chase of the Titans bat first total of 309/7 in Potch whilst 2 earlier home games at the Wanderers were washed out.

Cobras:

The Cobras also have 8 log points but they have played 1 game fewer than the Lions. They have 2 wins and 3 defeats against their name and 1 of those victories came in the first meeting with the Lions. The Cobras came out on top by 21 runs in Oudsthoorn, successfully defending a bat first total of 298/5 which saw Hamza top score with an unbeaten 88 whilst Linde and Paterson took 3 Lions wickets a piece.

Last time out the Cobras bowlers were put to the sword by the Titans batsmen at Newlands and they came up 83 runs short chasing a hefty 321 for victory. The Cobras have won once away from home, a 3 wicket victory against the Knights in Bloem where an unbeaten 114 from the impressive Verreynne helped them reach the victory target of 283 with 3 balls to spare.

Verdict:

With Hendricks on duty with the Proteas the Lions have lost their main run getter and this looks like a good opportunity for the Cobras to move up the standings and into the play off positions.
