saodiSupersport Park, Centurion is the venue for the second One Day International between South Africa and Sri Lanka and after a dominant display at the weekend the Proteas are 1-0 up with four to play.

After surprisingly losing the test series 2-0 the Proteas were under the microscope for the first ODI in Johannesburg on Sunday and they responded well, coming through with an 8 wicket victory.

The Proteas won the toss and opted to bowl first at the Bullring and Lungi Ngidi promptly removed both Sri Lankan openers in the first 4 overs of the match. Sri Lanka recovered to some degree and Kusal Mendis top scored with 60 but his side collapsed from 195/4 to 231 all out, leaving a full 3 overs unused. Ngidi and Tahir both took 3 wickets and Tahir was by far the most economical with his 10 overs costing just 26 runs.

Although Reeza Hendricks contributed just a single run to the chase Quinton de Kock made 81 and Faf du Plessis was unbeaten on 112 at the end with Rassie van der Dussen on 32 not out. The Proteas got home in 38.5 overs even though they hit just the 1 maximum compared to 3 from Sri Lanka.

The Proteas skipper was named Man of the Match.

Verdict:

Sri Lanka’s middle / lower order collapse on Sunday was tame as they had looked capable of pushing towards a total in the high 200’s. If they can cope better with Tahir they should be more competitive here.

The recent game against Pakistan at Centurion was high scoring and working on the assumption we get a full day / nights play in good batting conditions, 12 or more 6’s looks on.
