Leicester City v Wolves

Brendan Rodgers turned a number of things around after taking over at Leicester in February and they were playing some very watchable football towards the end of the campaign. They finished in ninth spot with 52 points but much of the late work revolved around gearing up for this season and they should go well.

Harry Maguire's transfer to Manchester United is a blow for sure with time running out to sign a replacement. Signings include Youri Tielemans who impressed in his loan spell from Monaco last season and Ayoze Perez who bolsters the goal threat.

Wolves finished seventh last season, best of the rest and 5 points clear of Leicester. Assuming they qualify for the Europa League they might find resources stretched but they have been making deals permanent for players who were already with the club on loan whilst adding a couple more reinforcements. Wolves were competitive in most of their matches against top 6 sides so if they cut out dropping points against the lesser lights they should be in for another good season.

Leicester were 2-0 winners at home to Wolves at the start of last season whilst Wolves edged a 7 goal thriller (4-3) in the return.

Verdict:

An interesting match up between 2 decent sides who could be closely matched throughout the season. Preference is for both sides to find the net.

Also on Sunday Arsenal head to a Newcastle side who have lost the services of Rafa Benitez and replaced him with Steve Bruce. Striker Joelinton is a big money arrival on Tyneside from Hoffenheim but odds of around 2/1 for Newcastle to be relegated suggest it could be a long season.

The Gunners finished fifth last season and were runners up to Chelsea in the Europa League. Highly rated Nicolas Pepe from Lille is among the new recruits Ramsay, Koscielny and Welbeck are amongst those departed and reprots suggest transfer deadline day could be hectic. The Gunners are 27/20 to finish in the top 4 and more than 40/1 to win the title.

Verdict:

Arsenal's road trips last season were often high scoring affairs and this campaign could follow a similar pattern. If the visitors are primed to do themselves justice on this opening weekend I can see them finding the net at least twice.

Manchester United v Chelsea

United finished sixth last season, 6 points shy of fourth placed Chelsea with a poor start and poor finish costing them a chance of a top 4 spot. At the time of writing the transfer window was still open and big money has been spent on the defence with Harry Maguire and Wan-Bissaka coming in. Lukaku is expected to move on and Pogba has also bee n heavily linked with a move away so expect some late drama in the transfer market.

United are trading at around 30/1 to win the title and 11/10 to finish in the top 4.

Chelsea have turned to Frank Lampard to see them through a campaign where transfer activity in terms of arrivals has been hit by a ban. Eden Hazard's is the most notable of the departures and the talented youngsters at the club who's opportunities had been restricted last season are likely to have a big role to play. Chelsea failed to build on a solid start to the 2018/19 league campaign but they did win the Europa League and finished as runners up in the League Cup. They can be backed at a similar price to United when it comes to winning the league and finishing in the top 4.

Both league meetings last season finished all square, 2-2 at Stamford Bridge and 1-1 at Old Trafford whilst United won an FA Cup tie in London 2-0.

Verdict:

I'm pretty open minded about which way this game could go and preference is for the goals markets. I'm on the fence between under and over 2.5 in total so 2-3 is where I'm heading at even money.
