European Championship Group C gets under way on Sunday when Austria and North Macedonia meet in Bucharest

In qualifying for these finals Austria finished as runners up to Poland, 6 points in arrears and 5 better off than North Macedonia and Slovenia. Israel and Latvia finished in the bottom 2 positions. Austria won 6, drew 1 and lost 3 of ther group matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding 9. They started with defeats at home to

Poland and in Israel before winning 6 and drawing 1 of their next 7 which included a 4-1 win in North Macedonia and a 2-1 victory in the return.

 

Austria's World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign started with a 2-2 draw in Scotland and a 3-1 home win over Faroe Islands but they were then thrashed 4-0 by Denmark in another home fixture.

 

In a couple of recent warm ups Austria lost 1-0 to England and drew 0-0 with Slovakia.

North Macedonia

 

North Macedonia just held on to third place in their qualification group before beating Kosovo 2-1 and Georgia 1-0 in the play offs. They lost home and away to both Austria and Poland but took 4 points from the 2 games against Slovenia

 

World Cup 2022 qualifying started with a 3-2 defeat in Romania and a 5-0 home win over Liechtenstein before they pulled off a huge shock with a 2-1 win over

Germany away from home.

 

The most notable recent friendly matches saw North Macedonia draw 1-1 with Slovenia and they beat Kazakhstan 4-0.

 

In the outright betting to win the tournament North Macedonia are one of the rank outsiders, trading at around 500/1

Austria are trading at around 13/20 to win the game with the draw at 2.65/1 and North Macedonia can be backed at around 5.25/1

The Verdict:

 

Austria haven't impressed of late but they had this opponent stone cold in the qualifying group. If you are prepared to treat North Macedonia's WCQ win in Germany as a freak result then the rank outsiders are up against it.

 

This is a speculative play considering its the first group match in a major tournament for both sides but both recent head to heads went over 2.5 goals and if either side can find an early enough break through that might not be the end of the scoring. With the Dutch and Ukraine to come winning this game might just be their best chance of getting out of this quartet.
