Golf: English Championship
Venue: Hanbury Manor, Hertfordshire, England.
Dates: 6th – 9th August 2020
The English swing of the revamped European Tour continues at Hanbury Manor with the English Championship. The event is being played whilst the first major of the year gets underway in California, however there is still a very strong field assembled for the inaugural hosting of this event. The course at Hanbury Manor is 7000+ yards, making it a real test for all in the field and with over £1.5 million in the prize pot – there is plenty to play for. With one of the most impressive fields assembled thus far on the European Tour since the COVID 19 enforced postponement, it promises to be a fascinating weekend of golf.
The European Tour continues to find its feet once more following the pandemic and it promises to be another excellent week at Hanbury Manor: –
Belgian Thomas Detry is a prolific performer on the European Tour, and he should relish the conditions here, fresh off his 2nd place finish at the English Open last week.
English Ryder Cup hero Lee Westwood decided not to travel to America for the PGA Championship, and he will be sure to try and make his presence felt here in Hertfordshire.
Following his win at the English Open last week, Sam Horsfield looks set to make a real assault on the European Tour Order of Merit this season and he will relish conditions here.
Few players in the field have the playing accolades that Ross Fisher enjoys and whilst he hasn’t been in his best form of late, his top 25 finish at the English Open last week could be a sign of things to come.
Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal is operating at number 15 on the European Tour Order of Merit and despite looking undercooked last week at the English Open, he could go the distance here.
1st Round Leader
Producing the goods over 72 holes is often the most difficult thing for any golfer to do therefore here are our first round leader picks:-
Englishman Andy Sullivan picked up a win on the tour last month and his habit of playing streaky golf could see him get off to a flyer here.
Young Italian Renato Paratore took the British Masters by storm last month, winning with ease and he will be looking to continue that form this week in the Hertfordshire.
With two top 10 finishes from his last 3 starts, Chris Paisley is in decent form and he could get off to a flying start here in familiar surroundings.
Top Ten Finish
With so many quality players assembled here in Hertfordshire, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:-
New Zealander Ryan Fox is one of the most consistent performers around and in a field packed with big names, he should be one to watch come Sunday afternoon.
Malaysian Gavin Green is making his first appearance on the European Tour since the restart and he is a classy operator that could be involved on Sunday afternoon.
Dane Thorbjorn Olesen has been cleared in his criminal proceedings off the course and he will be looking to return to the European Tour in style here, having warmed up at the English Open last week.
