Liverpool

Liverpool booked their place in the final with a 4-1 aggregate win over Spurs in the semis. They put in a very rare poor performance in losing the first leg 1-0 in London but Spurs offered little resistance in the return at Anfield which Liverpool won 4-0.

The holders of this trophy had also faced Premier League opposition in all 3 of their earlier ties. They thrashed West Ham 5-1 at Anfield, then won 3-2 at Brighton before beating Southampton 2-1 away from home in the quarter finals.

Liverpool are now 16 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the EPL log and although that lead will be reduced if Arsenal win their game in hand at home to Chelsea on Sunday it's surely a matter of time until they are crowned champions. In midweek Liverpool were involved in a thrilling UCL Round of 16 second leg against PSG at Anfield. They held a 1-0 advantage after a win in Paris but PSG ran out 1-0 winners on the night to level the tie up and it went all the way to spot kicks with the French side prevailing.

Newcastle

Newcastle won both legs of their semi final match up with Arsenal by a 2-0 scoreline. Isak and Gordon were on target in the first leg in London and Murphy and Gordon scored in the return at St. James Park. Note Gordon will miss this match through suspension.

Newcastle's cup run started with a 2-1 win at Forest and they made home advantage count in the next 3 rounds, seeing off Wimbledon (1-0), Chelsea (2-0) and Brentford (3-1).

In the EPL Newcastle won 1-0 at West Ham on Monday night, a victory which took them into sixth position and their tally of 47 points is 23 shy of Liverpool's.

Recent Head to Head

The first of two league meetings this season saw Newcastle score a late equalizer to claim a 3-3 draw at St. James Park in early December.

The return at Anfield took place as recently as 26th February and Liverpool won it 2-0

The Betting:

To Lift the trophy by any method of victory Liverpool are 3/10 and Newcastle are 21/10

Liverpool are 13/20 to win the match in regulation time, the draw is 31/10 and Newcastle are 38/10

Both teams to score in normal time is 13/20 and over 2.5 total goals is 6/10

Mo Salah is 27/10 to score the first goal and in the same market Isak is 5/1

The Verdict

That was an energy sapping UCL match Liverpool were involved in on Tuesday and their team news will be worth a second look with a couple of defenders carrying knocks. Meanwhile Newcastle will be without Anthony Gordon, a huge blow to their chances of ending a lengthy trophy drought.

I'm with Liverpool to win in normal time but with Newcastle contributing to the scoring

Bet: Liverpool to win the match and both teams to score? (yes) at 23/10 with Sportingbet (boosted from 2/1)
