WSB Logo Orange 80x80The golfing world will turn their eyes to Florida this week as the best players in the world take on The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass for a purse of $25 million dollars. We look at this week’s golf from a betting angle and pick 4 players to take on the bookmakers.

The Course

One of the most famous courses in the world, TPC Sawgrass lies one mile away from the Atlantic Ocean in Ponte Vedra, Florida. The greens are slightly smaller than the tour average as are the narrow fairways that are lined with strategic bunkers and water hazards. Water is in play on 16 of the 18 holes. An accurate driving and iron game is essential, however, longer hitters have featured consistently since the tournament moved to its current time slot in March. The par 72 course plays 7,275 yards and while the cream often rises to the top there are very few players, if any who can say they have mastered it.

Market Leaders

Scottie Scheffler will be looking for his 3rd successive title and so he is the favourite going into this week. The bookies have him trading at 5.00 while Rory McIlroy is trading at 12.00. Last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational runner up Collin Morikawa is 3rd at odds of 15.00 with rising star Ludvig Aberg at 19.00. Justin Thomas is 23.00 with two-time Major Champion in 2024, Xander Schauffele trading at 26.00.

Selections:

Russell Henley at 36.00

Henely had a dream weekend at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, winning the tournament by one shot after shooting one-under in his final round. He has had a brilliant start to this year playing in five tournaments where he has a win, a top 5 and two top 10 finishes. Henley will look to take this momentum into this week and challenge the whole field at a course where he has had a top 20 and top 15 in the last 3 years but missed the cut last year.

Suggested bet: Russell Henley each way at 36.00

Laurie Canter at 176.00

There is yet to be a player on the PGA Tour that has recorded three top 5 finishes this season, however these have been on the DP World Tour and he appears to have slipped under the bookies radar.

Canter has played four tournaments this year finishing second, first and third in three of them. His win came at the Bahrain Championship in a playoff. Canter has had a remarkable run of form, and I can see him being a real contender this week, despite making his Sawgrass debut.

Suggested bet: Laurie Canter each way at 176.00.

Brian Harman at 111.00

Harman is a golfer who often goes under the radar, but he steps it up in the tournaments that matter. He finished runner-up in last year’s Players Championship securing his third top 10 finish at the tournament over his last five starts. Harman has already secured three top 25 finishes this season and will be looking to put in his best result so far.

Suggested bet: Brian Harman each way at 111.00 and a larger bet on a top 10 finish at 8.50.

Hideki Matsuyama at 34.00

Back up the betting boards for this one and Hideki ticks a lot of boxes this week.

He has current form with a pair of top 25’s and a top 15 in his last 3 starts but it is his course form that really impresses with a 6th place last year and a 5th place in 2023. Like many top players he is prone to the odd missed cut here but is far more consistent than most.

Suggested bet: Hideki Matsuyama each way at 34.00
