WSB Logo Orange 80x80The Detroit Golf Club in Michigan is the host venue for this weekend’s PGA Tour stop, the Rocket Mortgage Classic and we select 4 players to take on the bookmakers.

The Detroit Golf Club plays to a par 72 and much like last week’s Travelers Championship we can expect plenty of birdies and the winning score last year was -26 by Tony Finau. Although the greens are small and there are trees running alongside the fairway this is very much a target practise for the pros and there is no way you are going to win the event without a red hot putter.

SELECTIONS

Suggested Bet: Rickie Fowler each way at 14/1

Of the favourites I like Fowler, who certainly has a new lease on life and is up to 35th in the World Rankings. Fowler was 5th at the US Open two weeks back and although disappointed that he faded down the stretch he would have taken plenty from been back in contention again. He followed that up with a solid 13th last week and he has finished now in the Top 15 in his last 4 starts and in 5 of his last 6. His poor form in 2022 and 2021 in this event can be excused given his golf was in the slump, but he did finish 12th here back in 2020 suggesting he won’t have any problems with the layout.

Suggested Bet: Cameron Davis each way at 40/1

Cameron Davis won here two years ago and he followed that up with a respectable 14th place finish last year. That victory by the way came after 2 missed cuts at this course suggesting that someone totally unexpected could pop up and win this one.

Davis recent form hasn’t been great and he had 3 missed cuts before a top 35 finish last week, but prior to those missed cuts he did finish in the Top 5 so his “A” game is probably not that far away.

Suggested Bet: Keegan Bradley each way at 28/1

Bradley is another player who like Fowler disappeared from golf leader boards for some time, but he was excellent in winning the Travelers Championship last week. His course form is not bad especially given that his game hasn’t always been at its best in recent seasons and he has had two Top 50’s and a Top 15 in his last 3 years.

I often find that as players get older they hold their form well perhaps knowing and appreciating that their days at this level are numbered.

Suggested Bet: Chez Reavie each way at 150/1

It is the time to throw in a real outsider and Reavie certainly fits the bill. He doesn’t tick the course form box and didn’t play last year and his previous starts have actually ended in missed cuts. He has been showing good form in recent weeks though and has a Top 25 in his penultimate start with a Top 5 finish last week. If Reavie can hold that form he can give us a run for our money at a triple figure price.
