The big event on the DP World Tour this week comes in the form of the BMW Championship. The world’s best players will be in action at the competition, including those that have joined the controversial LIV Tour. However, it makes for a compelling betting event for golf fans, and you can find out more about the event and the leading contenders here.

BMW Championship Information

The BMW Championship has been a regular part of the golf calendar since it was established in 1955. The event is played at Wentworth Club in Surrey, and is a par 72 event. Players involved will compete across 7,267 yards in the stroke play event, which boasts a massive prize purse of $8 million. It is a huge event on the European Tour, and the player that gets the win gets an automatic starting berth in the following year’s US Open, as well as the next three Open Championships.

The tournament record score is held by An Byeong-Hun, who finished with a par score of -21 in 2015. Meanwhile, the aggregate score is still held by Brian Bamford, who finished with a score of 266 when winning the title in 1961. The most recent winner of the event was Billy Horschel in 2021.

Leading Contenders

Rory McIlroy is the clear favourite in the betting for the event this year, as the Northern Irish star looks to win the event for the second time. His previous victory was recorded in 2014, as he finished a shot clear of Shane Lowry. He nearly added a second victory in 2018, but he finished two shots behind Francisco Molinari. McIlroy comes into the event in excellent form after landing the Tour Championship by one shot just a couple of weeks ago.

Jon Rahm is also prominent in the BetXchange betting for the event this weekend, as the Spanish star looks to improve on his second place finish from 2019. Rahm finished in a tie for 15th at the Tour Championship a few weeks ago, and it could be argued that his form hasn’t been as strong as he would have been hoping for in 2022 after coming into the year as the top-ranked player.

There are a number of players at huge prices that could have leading claims this weekend, including Robert MacIntyre and Francisco Molinari, who have shown bits and pieces of solid form throughout the season. Talor Gooch may be an interesting contender from the LIV Tour, as he played well for long periods last season, before fading in the final stages.

BMW Championship Prediction

This should be a thrilling event this weekend. However, the slight preference is for Shane Lowry, who often performs very well at this course. He finished second in the event in 2014, and could improve on that showing this year based on the showings that we have seen from the Irishman throughout 2022.

Pick: Shane Lowry at 16/1 with BetXchange.
