After a stunning match play event on the PGA Tour last weekend, the action continues on Thursday, as some of the world’s best players will be competing at TPC San Antonio. The Valero Texas Open has been staged since 1922, and it promises to once again be a competitive event on the PGA Tour this weekend.
Event Details
TPC San Antonio will host the PGA Tour action this weekend, as the course has played host to the event since 1994. Players will be competing over a total distance of 7,435 yards this weekend, with the stroke play event having a par of 72. A total purse of $8.9 million is available to players in action this weekend.
Tournament Records
The tournament aggregate record is held by Tommy Amour III, who finished with a score of 254 in 2003. However, the par record is still held by Mike Souchak, who finished at 27-under when claiming victory in 1955. Two players are tied for the most wins at the Valero Texas Open, with Arnold Palmer and Justin Leonard both winning on three occasions.
Latest Odds
There is an open feel to the event this weekend, according to the BetXchange betting markets available. Tyrrell Hatton is the standout choice at the top of the betting, but he is available at 15/1. Second choice in the betting is Rickie Fowler at 20/1.
Meanwhile, Si Woo Kim is a 22/1 chance for the PGA Tour event this weekend. Hideki Matsuyama is a very competitive price for each-way bettors at 25/1, while Davis Riley and Corey Conners are next in the betting at 28/1. Taylor Montgomery and Chris Kirk are both 30/1 chances in the betting.
Contenders
There are a number of players that could hold realistic chances this weekend, including Hatton, who heads the betting. This will be his eighth appearance on the PGA Tour this season, and he has been in strong form over recent months, having finished in the top ten three times. He appears to be at a backable price this weekend, but there could be value elsewhere.
Matt Kuchar could be a very solid play at a bigger price in Texas, as he has previous experience at the Valero Texas Open. The American finished two shots off the lead last year, and also comes into this weekend after finishing in the top ten on three from eleven starts this year.
Matt Wallace boasts solid form coming into this event in Texas this weekend, as the Englishman finally landed a first PGA Tour event last weekend at the Corales Puntacana Championship. He could be very well priced to continue his solid form this weekend with a top-ten finish in a very competitive field.
Valero Texas Open Pick
Wallace would be our main play in the top ten betting market, but for the outright winner we will be siding with Corey Conners. He claimed victory in this event back in 2019, and he has already shown some excellent form this year by finishing in the top 25 places on six occasions.
Pick: Corey Conners at 28/1 with BetXchange.
