Race 1
BARBARESCO has produced two good second place finishes to date. He raced from just off the pace last time, but found one too good in the form of Sandringham Summit who has won a Grade 1 and 2 since. The son of Gimmethegreenlight would have strengthened up during his time off the track. He jumps from a good draw of three and should take a power of beating.
POLICY OF TRUTH‘S last two starts have been good. He stayed on at the finish over this distance on the Vaal Classic course last time, but found one too good in the form of Viva Spirit. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
HALBERDIER was a tad disappointing in his last start after two creditable efforts. He drops to the 1200m and S’manga Khumalo may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.
Race 2
WOMAN OF POWER produced a promising debut over 1000m on the Vaal Classic course. She returns from an 18-week break, during which time she would have strengthened up. The daughter of Vercingetorix meets the right field today and she can go one better.
HAPPY MO ran a fair race on debut over this C&D. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. The daughter of Royal Mo would have gained from the experience and with the natural improvement that is expected, she should pose a threat.
WHIRLYBIRD did not settle in the early stages of her last start over 1400m which may have cost her the victory. She drops back to 1200m and gets the services of 2.5kgs claiming apprentice Siyanda Sosibo. She jumps from pole position and should have a say in the outcome of this contest.
Race 3
CRYSTAL MAIDEN showed improvement when third in her last start over 1600m on the Vaal Classic course. The manner in which she finished off her race that day suggests that she will love the extra 100m on offer. The daughter of Flower Alley is a progressive type and may be the one to side with.
HEART PEAKS challenged strongly in her last start over 1400m, but found one too good in the form of Elemental Force. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. If seeing out the extra distance on offer, she should pose a threat.
CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL is an unraced daughter of Silvano from the Mike de Kock stable with JP van der Merwe in the saddle. She is related to Grade 1 winner Sparkling Water. If not too green, she should start her career on a positive note. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to her chances.
Race 4
BIRTHRIGHT produced an eye-catching debut effort over 1200m at the Vaal. He was green in running, but finished his race off well. The son of William Longsword would have gained from the experience and would have strengthened up during his time off the track. He will be ideally suited to the 1700m and if fit, he should be the one to beat.
ROYAL EDITION has shown improvement in each of his outings to date. He raced from a handy position last time, but was outrun late by Falcon Strike. The son of Flower Alley tries the 1700m for the first time and if seeing out the extra distance on offer, he should pose a threat.
MVELELO tried hard in his last start over 1600m at the Vaal, but found one too good in the form of Fushimi Inari. He will be ideally suited to the 1700m and is one of the leading contenders.
Race 5
DAKOTA CAT followed up her maiden win with a good second-place finish over 1600m on the Vaal Classic course. She set the pace that day, but found one too good in the form of Silver Sanctuary. She is the best weighted runner in this contest and may be hard to peg back in the run down to the line.
CAPE LIGHTS‘ last two starts have been decent. She has won once and finished second three times from six starts on this course. She always gives of her best and should be right there at the finish.
SHARAPOVA has good consistent form lines to her name. She has won once and finished second once from as many starts over this C&D. The daughter of Querari is having her peak run today and should be cherry-ripe. She merits healthy respect in this line-up.
Race 6
TAIL OF THE COMET followed up his impressive debut victory with a good third-place finish in the Grade 2 TabGold Umkhomazi Stakes. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. The son of Gimmethegreenlight clearly has ability and he carries a handy galloping mass of 54kgs. If jumping on terms, he should be the one to beat.
HAWKBILL finished 0.5 lengths behind FIRE ‘N FLAMES last time. He is 3kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. He gets the blinkers fitted and the headgear should keep his mind on the task at hand. If fit, he should go close to winning
FIRE ‘N FLAMES ran a good race in the Grade 2 Durban Golden Horseshoe last time. The 11-week break would have done him the world of good. He is versatile and should be competitive.
Race 7
BACK IN BUSINESS won a good race in his last start over this distance at the Vaal. The manner in which he ran on at the finish that day was eye-catching. It must be noted that the horse that finished second has come out and won since. The son of William Longsword has ability and he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure from pole position.
AUSSENKEHR has decent recent form lines to his credit. He has finished third in both his efforts on this course. He always gives of his best and must be included in all bets.
TEXAS RED showed some signs of a form return in his last start over this C&D. He is having his peak run today and will be cherry-ripe. The 4yo gelding runs well for Malesela Katjedi and should have a say.
Race 8
PUERTO MANZANO is better than his last start in the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Durban July. He returns from an 11-week break which may have done him the world of good. He has won three times and finished third once from five starts on this course. He does have bigger plans for the season, but is the class horse in the race and may be the one to side with.
DUKE OF SUSSEX ran on when third over 1800m on the Vaal Classic course last time. He finished third in his only attempt over this C&D. The 6yo gelding may be the one to fill the exacta spot.
TROIS TROIS QUATRE was super-impressive when winning his last start over 1800m on this course. He won his penultimate start over this distance. This is his toughest test to date, but he carries a light mass of 50kgs and should run a big race.
Race 9
TOTAL SURRENDER was given a peach of a ride when winning his last start over 2000m at the Vaal. The son of Flower Alley received a four-pound penalty for that victory. He is above average and he can notch up the hat-trick.
YOUCANTHURRYLOVE finished 0.7 lengths behind the top choice last time. He is 1.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. However, TOTAL SURRENDER won easier than the official margin suggests and he may still have the upper hand.
HAZLO GRANDE has decent consistent form lines to his credit. He stayed on when fourth over this C&D last time. He takes a drop back in class and will be mowing down the frontrunners
