Race 1
BIRTHRIGHT was his own worst enemy over 1700m last time as he over raced in the early stages. However, the manner in which he stayed on to finish second was encouraging. The son of William Longsword is a progressive type and if seeing out the extra distance on offer, he should find himself in the winner’s enclosure.
KUDZU finished 1.8 lengths behind the top choice last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and he may have to settle for the same result
THE OCTAGON is the stable companion of the top choice. He produced a decent debut effort over 1160m on the Standside course. The son of Ideal World would have gained from the experience and takes a big rise in distance. With the natural improvement that is expected, he should be competitive.
Race 2
TYSON THE BRAVE stayed on when fifth over 1200m on the Vaal Classic course last time. His penultimate run when third over 1400m on the Standside course was eye-catching as he should have won that day. The son of Vercingetorix is a versatile sort and with luck in running, he can shed his maiden tag.
JUST NUISANCE lost a length leaving the start over this C&D last time, but stayed on to finish third. If jumping on terms, he should pose a massive threat to the top choice.
TRIP TO STATES has finished third in his last two starts over 1200m. The manner in which he finishes off his races suggests that he will love the rise to 1450m. From pole position, he should be involved in the fight to the finish.
Race 3
PRESLEY produced a decent debut effort over this distance on the Standside course. He was slow into stride, took time to find his feet but the manner in which he stayed on at the finish was encouraging. It must be noted that Chocolate Bomb has won again since and the second horse has also won since. The son of Oratorio would have gained from the experience and if not too green around the turn, he can win a race of this nature.
EMPRESS GAME finished third in his first start for the Fanie Bronkhorst stable. His first three efforts over this distance were decent. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
GRIFFIN PARK found betting support when fifth over 1200m last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished fourth that day has come out and won since. The drop to 1000m may suit him well and he cannot be ignored.
Race 4
SIBERIAN STEEL raced from just off the pace over this distance on the Vaal Classic course last time, tried hard but found one too good in the form of Covert Operator. He gets the services of 2.5kgs claiming apprentice Donald Geerthsen which will help his chances. He is likely to race on the speed from his good draw of two and may be hard to peg back.
PENDRAGON finished 1 length behind the top choice last time. He is 0.5kgs worse off at the weights today and may have to settle for the same result.
TAYOOBA‘S last start can be ignored as she was reported to be not striding out. Her two runs prior to that outing were good. If putting her best foot forward, she should give the males a run for their money.
Race 5
UNZEN produced an eye-catching comeback run over 1000m on this course. The manner in which he stayed on over a distance short of his best was encouraging. The son of Erupt will love the rise to 1200m and he should strip much fitter. He does meet a competitive field, but has the class to notch up his third career victory.
RED BOMBER fought hard for his last victory over 1450m on this course. He returns from a 13-week break, during which time he was gelded. The son of Lancaster Bomber has no issues with the drop to 1200m and is one of the leading contenders.
MOUNT PILATUS was not disgraced when fifth in the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes last time. It must be noted that multiple horses from that form line have come out and won since. If jumping on terms, he should be involved in the fight to the finish.
Race 6
MK‘S PRIDE is better than his last start in the Grade 1 The HKJC Champions Cup. He is making his seasonal debut and is unbeaten from three starts on this course. The 6yo horse has won twice and finished third three times from six starts over this distance. He is the class horse in the race and if fit, he can win.
CAPTAIN HINDSIGHT is a winner of his last two starts. It must be noted that the horse that finished third in his last outing has come out and won since. He takes on stronger, but carries a handy galloping mass of 54kgs and can notch up the hat-trick
BARD OF AVON had excuses in his last start over this C&D. He won a game race in his penultimate outing over 1400m at the Vaal. With his light mass of 50.5kgs, he should have a say in the outcome of this contest.
Race 7
FUNKY MUSIC is a winner of his last three starts. He raced from a handy position over this distance on the Vaal Classic course last time and found a good finish to bring up his seventh career victory. He has won once, finished second once and third once from four starts over this C&D. He is in top form and merits healthy respect. He is carded to race on 21 September 2023 and his progress in that race will need to be monitored.
KOTINOS finished 4.5 lengths behind the top choice last time. He is 4kgs better off at the weights today and should finish closer as a result.
RATTLE BAG was a tad disappointing in her last start over this C&D. Her penultimate run when winning by 3 lengths over this C&D catches the eye. If putting her best foot forward, she should give the males a run for their money
Race 8
BATTLEGROUND is a winner of his last two starts, the latest of which was over 2600m on this course. The manner in which he finished off his race that day suggests that he will love the rise to 2800m. He is in a very good space and can notch up the hat-trick.
BREEZE OVER finished 1 length behind the top choice last time. He is 2kgs better off at the weights today which should be enough for the tables to be turned. However, BATTLEGROUND won easier than the official margin suggests and may still have the upper hand
AMERICAN GRAYSON finished 1.25 lengths behind the top choice last time. He is 1kg better off at the weights today and should finish closer as a result. The son of Pomodoro has no stamina issues and merits obvious inclusion
