Race 1
WHAT A LUCY made the expected natural improvement when fourth in her last start over 1200m on the Turffontein Inside course. She showed good speed that day, but was outrun late. The daughter of What A Winter should have no issues with the drop back to 1000m and she should give the males a run for their money.
DARING ACT ran a good race when second over this distance at Turffontein last time. He should have finished closer to the winner that day as he hung in the final 300m. Gavin Lerena takes the ride and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.
EIGER SANCTION is an unraced son of Potala Palace from the St John Gray stable with Philasande Mxoli in the saddle. He is related to multiple winners including After Hours and Undisclosed. If not in need of the run, he should start his career on a positive note. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to his chances.
Race 2
FUSHIMI INARI stayed on when second over 1700m on this course last time. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. The son of Danon Platina tries the cheekpieces for the first time which should keep his mind on the task at hand. He may be the one to side with in this line-up
MVELELO took on winners in his last start over this distance on the Turffontein Inside course. His penultimate run when second over 1800m catches the eye. JP van der Merwe steps back into the saddle and he should pose a massive threat.
EXHALE has shown improvement in each of his outings to date. The manner in which he finished off his last outing suggests that he will love the extra distance on offer. He will strip much fitter and may have more to come.
Race 3
GRIFFIN PARK was in need of his debut effort over this distance at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. It must be noted that multiple horses from that form line have come out and won since. The son of Querari would have gained from the experience and with the natural improvement that is expected, he can win a race of this nature.
EIFFEL TOWER produced a decent debut effort over this distance on the Classic course. He would have come on from the run and should make the natural progression.
POCKET WATCH was a tad disappointing in his last start. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. If suited to the 1200m, he can improve to finish in the placings under Gavin Lerena.
Race 4
STORM PLAYER caught the eye on debut over this distance on the Classic course. Despite racing green, she showed good pace before getting outrun late. The daughter of Vercingetorix would have gained from the experience and with the natural improvement that is expected, she can go one better.
OUT THE MIST should have finished closer to the winner on debut as she was green in running and received a bump at the 400m mark. The daughter of Willow Magic will love the extra furlong on offer and she should make the natural progression.
STRIKING ANGEL‘S last start may have come too soon after her encouraging debut effort. She returns from a 12-week break which may have done her the world of good. She has plenty of scope and if not in need of the run, she should give a good account of herself.
Race 5
AVOONTOAST is lightly raced with good form lines to her credit. She returns from a 10-week break which may have done her the world of good. The manner in which she finishes off her races suggests that she will love the rise to 1800m. If not in need of this outing, she can notch up her second-career victory.
OPERA GLASS stayed on when third over 2600m on the Turffontein Inside course last time. She has won twice, finished second three times and third once from nine starts on this course. She always gives of her best and cannot be ignored.
BOLD FORTUNE finished 1 length behind the second choice last time. She is 2.5kgs worse off at the weights today and may battle to turn the form around.
Race 6
PRIMROSE PATH followed up her maiden victory with a good second-place finish over 1450m on the Classic course. She stayed on at the finish that day, but found one too good in the form of Key Element. She does have a wide draw of ten to contend with, but gets the services of Gavin Lerena who will give her all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
COUNTESS DANZA raced wide around the turn last time and understandably lacked a finish in the straight. She is in a good space and with luck in running, she should go close to winning. She is carded to race on 24 August 2023 and her progress in that race will need to be monitored.
LIVERPOOL LEGEND showed some signs of a form return in her last start over 2400m on this course. She has dropped to a competitive rating and S’manga Khumalo may be able to coax that little bit extra out of her where it matters most.
Race 7
Trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren holds a strong hand in this contest and he can saddle the first two past the post. CHOCOLATE BOMB was an easy winner when shedding his maiden tag at the second time of asking over 1000m at Turffontein. The son of Lancaster Bomber is a progressive type and is the stable elect with Gavin Lerena in the saddle. He takes on stronger, but has plenty of scope and should be up to the task at hand.
MOVING IN stayed on when fourth in the Non-Black Type Bloodstock SA Sales Cup last time. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. She is above average and should give the males a run for their money.
CORNWALL was disappointing in his last start after winning a good race on debut. He returns from a 23-week break which may have done him the world of good. If not in need of the run, he should give a good account of himself.
Race 8
COMING IN HOT has good recent form lines to his credit. He was running on strongly late when second over 1200m on the Turffontein Inside course. He has won once and finished third twice from five starts over this C&D. If not too far out of his ground at the halfway mark, he can go one better.
WHORLY WHORLY fought hard in his last start over this C&D, but was touched off by Back To Basics. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. If repeating that effort, he may be hard to peg back.
AFTER HOURS has fair recent form lines to his credit. On best form shown, he should be right there in the run down to the line.
Race 9
MEET THE CAPTAIN was doing her best work late when fourth over 1200m on this course last time. Her best form has been under in-form jockey Muzi Yeni. She carries another handy galloping mass of 53kgs and can return to winning ways.
COUNT YOUR CHANCES followed up her maiden victory with a good second- place finish over this distance at Turffontein. She finished second in her only C&D attempt. Should the top choice fluff her lines, she may be the one to pick up the pieces.
DUENNA was an easy winner when shedding her maiden tag over 1200m on the Turffontein Inside course. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. She does take on stronger, but has plenty of scope and should be up to the task at hand
