Race 1
This is a weak Maiden Plate and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is IN A BLUE MOON from the Lucky Houdalakis stable. He stayed on nicely in his comeback run over 1600m on the Turffontein Inside course. He would have come on from the run and should strip much fitter. In this type of field, he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.
BREATH OF MAGIC ran a fair race over 1600m last time. He finished 3.2 lengths behind PIKE PLACE in his penultimate run. He is 4kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned.
AL AKHTAAR finished 1 length behind the second selection last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and he may have to settle for the same result. He should strip a much fitter horse today and can finish in the placings.
Race 2
PAGE BOY is an unraced son of Flower Alley from the Sean Tarry stable with Gavin Lerena in the saddle. His mother, Fiorella won a Grade 2 over 1600m. He does not need to be a stable superstar to win in this type of field. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to his chances.
MOONLIGHT TRADER has produced two fair efforts to date. The manner in which he finishes off his races suggests that he will love the rise to 1400m. Rachel Venniker takes the 1.5kgs off his back and he is one of the leading contenders.
LEAD THE CHARGE was in need of his debut effort over 1000m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. It must be noted that the horse that finished fourth that day has come out and won since. The son of Lancaster Bomber would have gained from the experience and should make the natural improvement.
Race 3
AFRICAN BEAUTY was considered good enough to contest in the Listed Wilgerbosdrift Ruffian Stakes on debut. The daughter of Lancaster Bomber would have gained from the experience and should love the rise to 1400m. She faces Maiden Company today and with the natural improvement that is expected, she may be the one to side with.
QUEEN OF FIRE has shown good improvement in each of her outings to date. She set the pace over 1450m last time but found one too good in the form of Sunset Riot. She is a progressive type and should pose a massive threat.
INTRO stayed on when fifth over this distance at Turffontein last time. The daughter of Bezrin is improving with each run and she should earn another cheque for her patrons.
Race 4
BLUE QUARTZ is much better than her last start over 1600m at Turffontein. Her penultimate run when third over 1200m on the Classic course was encouraging. S’manga Khumalo is booked to ride and the daughter of Heavenly Blue may need a hard ride. She should have no issues with the 1700m and can shed her maiden tag.
SPRINGER’S last start can be ignored as she was reported to have choked up. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. She is having her peak run today and is one of the leading contenders.
ENSUAL KISS was in need of her debut effort over 1200m on the Classic course. The daughter of William Longsword would have come on from the run and should love the rise to 1700m. With the natural improvement that is expected, she can finish in the placings.
Race 5
BANHA BRIDGE finished 0.4 lengths behind POSITIVE ATTITUDE last time. He is 3.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. He has won once and finished second twice from six starts over this distance. With a bit of luck in running, he can return to winning ways.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE is a winner of his last two starts, the latest of which was over this C&D. He received a five-pound penalty for his last victory. He is in a good space and can notch up the hat-trick.
PROFESSOR SNAPE set the pace over 2000m last time, but was outrun late. On best form shown, he should be hard to peg back in the run down to the line.
Race 6
OPEN HIGHWAY ran a good race when third in his last start over this C&D. The manner in which he stayed on at the finish that day was encouraging. The son of Var takes on weaker company this afternoon and S’manga Khumalo may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.
MIDNIGHT FUSION has not finished too far off the winner in recent starts. It must be noted that multiple horses from her last form line have come out and won since. If seeing out the 1200m, she should give the males a run for their money.
THING CALLED LOVE produced a strong finish when winning her last start over 1000m on the Turffontein Inside course. She takes on stronger but has plenty of scope and should give a good account of herself.
Race 7
MIA FIORE ran on strongly late when third over 1450m on the Classic course last time. She finished second in her only attempt on this course. She returns from an 11-week break and if not in need of the run, she may find herself in the winner’s enclosure.
JJ’S EAGLE produced an encouraging post-maiden run over 1450m on the Classic course. She raced wide around the turn but stayed on at the finish. She takes a slight drop in class and is one of the leading contenders.
LADY CRUSADE ran a fair race against male company last time. She finished third in her penultimate run over 1000m on the Turffontein Inside course. She is back against her own sex and merits obvious inclusion.
Race 8
WORK OF TIME stayed on when second over 1200m on this course last time. The daughter of Rafeef will love the rise to 1400m. Kabelo Matsunyane returns to the saddle and she should give the males a run for their money.
TURBO POWER ran on well when second in his last start over 1200m on this course. He won his only attempt over this distance. With a bit of luck in running, he should throw out a big challenge to the top choice.
JURY’S OUT is better than his last start over 1600m on the Turffontein Inside course. On his previous form, he should be involved in the fight to the finish.
Race 9
LONGSWORD showed good signs of a form return in his last start over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside course. He won his only attempt over this C&D. The son of William Longsword has dropped to a competitive rating and Gavin Lerena may be able to get the best out of him.
KASHKAVAL was running on when third over 1500m on this course last time. He would have come on from the outing and should strip much fitter. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
MESCAL ran a fair race over 1000m on the Turffontein Inside course last time. He takes on weaker company this afternoon and gets the services of 4kgs claiming apprentice Trent Mayhew. He won his only attempt over this C&D and cannot be ignored
