Matchday 4 of the Uefa Champions League gets underway on Tuesday night when our focus is on Liverpool v Real Madrid and PSG v Bayern Munich

Liverpool v Real Madrid

Liverpool are in tenth position, 1 of 7 teams with 6 points from their first 3 UCL matches. They thrashed Frankfurt 5-1 away from home on Matchday 3 with goals from 5 different players. Matchday 2 saw Liverpool lose 1-0 away to Galatasaray, conceding from an early penalty and there was to be no way back. Their UCL campaign began at home to Atletico Madrid and they came out on top 3-2. Roberston and Salah had them 2-0 up in the first 6 minutes but Atletico restored parity before a late winner from Virgil.

In the EPL Liverpool snapped a 4 match losing streak with a 2-0 home win over in form Aston Villa on Saturday to move back into the top 4, albeit 7 points behind league leaders Arsenal. A second string side did lose 3-0 at home to Palace in the EFL Cup last week whilst in 5 EPL matches at Anfield Liverpool have won 4 and lost 1 (2-1 to Man United).

Real are 1 of 5 teams to have taken maximum points from their first 3 UCL outings thanks to wins at home to Juventus (1-0) and Marseille (2-1) either side of a 5-0 victory at Kairat Almaty.

In La Liga Real won 4-0 at home to Valencia at the weekend and with a record of 10 wins and 1 defeat they top the standings, 5 points clear of Barcelona.

The Verdict

A great game to watch but a tricky one to punt is how I view this although the onus is probably on Liverpool to force the issue. Mo Salah is back in the goalscoring column and a small price boost tips the vote in his favour to score anytime.

PSG v Bayern Munich

Defending champions PSG have made an impressive start o their defence of the UCL title. They started with a 4-0 home win over Atalanta and followed up with wins away from Paris at Barcelona (2-1) and most recently Leverkusen (7-2).

PSG top the Ligue 1 standings although they are not having things all their own way. With 7 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat they are 2 points clear of Marseille and Lens with Lille, Monaco and Lyon a further 2 points back.

Bayern also have the maximum 9 points and they too have been in the goals. A 3-1 home win over Chelsea was followed by a 5-1 victory at Pafos and on Matchday 3 they thrashed Club Brugge 4-0 in Munich. Harry Kanes has scored 5 of their UCL goals in those 3 wins.

In the Bundesliga Bayern have won all 9 of their matches, scoring 33 goals and conceding 4 and they are 5 points clear of Leipzig at the top of the standings.

The Verdict

These teams are no strangers to each other, PSG beat Bayern 2-0 in the Fifa World Cup in July but the German side have generally had much the better of the recent USL meetings. With both sides on maximum points they have leeway to draw this one and still be in the automatic qualification places for the Round of 16.
