Turffontein Race 1, 11:20

We get underway at 11:20 and 13 juveniles are carded to debut over 800m including a number of well bred, expensively purchased individuals. Caution is advised and it could pay to watch the betting markets and how these babies behave in the parade ring and on the way to the start for pointers. For the purposes of making an advance selection, Tenjiku has already been gelded and stand side draws are usually favourable over sprint trips. A small stake at a nice price is the opening play.

Bets: Tenjiku, Each Way at 16/1

Turffontein Race 2, 11:55

A large field of maidens going over 1160m for a big purse. Top trainer Sean Tarry has 3 runners and if fit enough to do herself justice after a break of 191 days, Green Sapphire, who boasts the strongest form lines in the race in my opinion, could be the right one under Richard Fourie.

Bets: Green Sapphire, Win at 6/1

Turffontein Race 3, 12:33

Equus champion Dave The King has some top races in his sights later in the season and whilst this is no doubt a stepping stone to much bigger things ahead, he has to be respected despite conceding weight all round. If Tail Of The Comet can find anything like his best form in his second run as a gelding he is more than capable of a bold show and can run a place.

Bets: Tail Of The Comet, Top 3 Finish at 2.72/1

Turffontein Race 4, 13:08

A Grade 3 contest for the girls over 1160m and it looks wide open. Mrs Browning tops the ratings and may have needed her last run. She has a decent enough draw and with in form Gavin Lerena in the irons gets the vote to chalk up a fifth course and distance victory.

Bets: Mrs Browning, Win at 7/1

Turffontein Race 5, 13:45

Another 1160m Grade 3, this time for the boys. Lucky Lad is the headline act in the line up but has to give weight all round. A chance is taken on Pistol Pete who is lightly raced, chased home a real talking horse last time giving chunks of weight and we probably haven't seen the best of this speedy individual yet.

Bets: Pistol Pete, Win at 33/10

Turffontein Race 6, 14:20

The Fillies Mile is also a Grade 3 and  VJ's Angel looks the one to beat, especially after the scratching of our original fancy Fatal Flaw. However Fiery Pegasus also comes into the picture if visiting overseas champions jockey Oisin Murphy came overcome a wide draw.

Bets: Fiery Pegasus, Win at 4/1

Turffontein Race 7, 14:55

The Dingaans sees Mike de Kock's rapidly upcoming colt Greaterix take on last years top 2yo filly Quid Pro Quo, the betting suggests these two will fight it out and they have both drawn well. Quid Pro Quo is taking on the boys and it's her first run back from a break and first outing at Turffontein. Her shrewd trainer probably had a few options of where to bring her back into action so big respect is given but gut feel is Greaterix might have her number on this occasion.

Bets: Greaterix, Win at 18/10

Betway Summer Cup

Turffontein Race 8, 16:00

A super competitive race and preference is for Royal Victory to defend his title. Although drawn wide his record over track and trip warrants huge respect and if horse and rider secure a good position from the break he can pick up his rivals in the home straight.

Purple Pitcher is taken to run into the top 4.

Bets: Win, Royal Victory at 9/1

Place (Top 4), Purple Pitcher at 42/10

Turffontein Race 9, 16:40

This is the “consolation” race for horses that didn't make the cut to run in the Summer Cup and some sort of case can be made for every runner in the field. A chance is taken on Good Council who may relish the 200om having often been campaigned over further

Bets: Good Council, Win at 9/1

Turffontein Race 10, 17:15

The Stayers are in action for the penultimate race and Poets Warrior tops the betting boards on the back of 5 career wins from just 11 runs. He now carries 60kg over further and comes up against some experienced campaigners in races of this nature, one of which is Breeze Over who ran a good prep over an inadequate trip last time out.

Bets: Breeze Over, Each Way at 10/1

Turffontein Race 11, 17:45

Let's hope there has been a few winners above for anyone following these selections as we head in to the final race, a competitive handicap over the mile. Down at the bottom of the weights Salute The Flag, the outsider of the party, could be worth a wager. Would have been in need of a recent comeback run and will have come on for that. Looking at form from earlier this year against the likes of Mastership he looks well in and has a handy draw of 2.

Bets: Salute The Flag, Each Way at 22/1
