With the group stages of the 2023 Rugby World Cup behind us, everyone's attention turns to the quarter-finals and in this article, 'The Don' will share his betting predictions for the Ireland vs. New Zealand and South Africa vs. France games, taking place on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Ireland v New Zealand
Ireland began their World Cup campaign with two convincing victories, defeating Romania by 74 points and Tonga by 43 points. They faced a tough challenge against the Springboks but emerged victorious with a close 13-8 score. In their final pool stage match, they secured their fourth win by 22 points against Scotland, resulting in Scotland's elimination from the World Cup and Ireland's qualification for the quarterfinals as the top team in their pool. Ireland did experience a few injuries in their last pool stage game, but bar James Ryan was available for selection.
New Zealand began their World Cup campaign with a crunch match against the host nation, France, but lost 27-13. However, they marched to the quarters by winning their subsequent matches against Namibia, Italy, and Uruguay, with impressive margins of over 65 points in each game. New Zealand is set to announce their squad just 48 hours before the game, and by all accounts don’t have any major injury concerns.
Verdict
With both teams entering this match in good form and a lot at stake, we can anticipate a closely contested game with numerous attempts at three-pointers. Ireland has exhibited slightly better form, having not lost any of their pool games. If they can sustain this momentum, they should be able to defeat the All Blacks and secure a spot in their first-ever Rugby World Cup semifinal.

France v South Africa
As the host nation, France entered the World Cup with high hopes and so far have lived up to them. They had a strong start with a victory over formidable opponents, New Zealand, and maintained their momentum by winning all the remaining pool stage games. They won all these games with an impressive average margin of 44.5 points. The French squad has not been announced yet, but there have been talks of the return of the French captain, Antoine DuPont, who could play a significant role in their match against the Springboks.
In South Africa's first two pool stage games, they secured victories against Scotland and Romania. However, they were unable to overcome Ireland in a closely contested match, which ended 13-8 in favour of Ireland. To conclude their pool stage, they comfortably defeated Tonga by 31 points. The Springboks have not yet announced their squad for the upcoming match against France but have suffered the loss of Makazole Mapimpi due to a fractured eye socket although it is unlikely he would have been in the 23.
Verdict
Like all the quarterfinals this week, there's a lot at stake, and we can expect the highest level of rugby to be displayed. With both teams in excellent form, this game should be tightly contested, with the bounce of the rugby ball potentially determining the team that advances in the tournament.
