Race 1
LETS PLAY POKER produced a promising debut effort over 1200m at the Vaal. He was green in running but the manner in which he finished off his race was encouraging. He returns from a 23-week break, during which time he would have strengthened up. He meets the right field and if not in need of the run, he can shed his maiden tag.
PHALA MILLIONS stayed on when sixth over 1000m at the Vaal last time. 4kgs claiming apprentice Nirvan Nastili retains the ride and should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
CHILLI MARMALADE ran a fair race in her comeback run over 1000m on the Inside course. She would have come on from the run and should strip much fitter. In this field, she is capable of finishing in the placings.
Race 2
QUICK TRIP showed good speed over this C&D last time, but was caught late by Sea Shanty. She is having her peak run today and will be cherry-ripe. The daughter of Trippi is back against her own sex and she may be the one to beat.
BILINGUAL showed very good improvement in her last start over this C&D. She was doing her best work at the finish. Gavin Lerena takes the ride and if confirming her recent improvement, she should pose a massive threat.
THE NAVY LARK almost caused an upset in her last start over 1200m at the Vaal. The fitting of the tongue-tie seems to have done the trick. If confirming her recent improvement, she can finish in the placings.
Race 3
SCARLETT PIMPERNEL ran a good race when third over 2000m on the Vaal Classic course last time. He returns from a 13-week break, during which time he was gelded. He finished second in his only attempt over this distance. If not in need of the run, he should notch up his third-career victory.
EMPORIUM returns from a 21-week break which may have done him the world of good. He finished second in his only attempt on this course. It is encouraging that Piere Strydom retains the ride and if fit, he can find a form return.
PRESLEY may not have seen out 1800m last time. He won his only attempt over this C&D in his penultimate run. Gavin Lerena steps back into the saddle and if ridden with restraint, he should be competitive.
Race 4
Trainer Robbie Sage holds a strong hand in this contest and can saddle the first two past the post. UNZEN was an easy winner of his last start over this C&D. He set the pace, found another kick and won with a ton in hand. The son of Erupt is in a good space and can follow up with another victory.
QUANTUM THEORY ran on strongly when second in his last start over 1200m on the Inside course. It must be noted that multiple horses from that form line have come out and won since. He has won twice and finished second once from as many starts over this C&D. Denis Schwarz retains the ride and the pair merit healthy respect.
GIMME A SHOT ran on strongly when winning her last start over 1500m on the Inside course. She finished third in her only attempt over this C&D. She carries a handy galloping mass of 52kgs and should give the males a run for their money.
Race 5
JUST BE LEKKER was not disgraced when fourth in the Non-Black Type Cape Racing Gold Rush last time. The manner in which she stayed on at the finish was encouraging. The daughter of William Longsword won her only attempt on this course and with Gavin Lerena back in the saddle, she can return to winning ways.
MAGICAL FLIGHT ran a decent race over 1600m on the Inside course last time. It must be noted that Frances Ethel has come out and won again since. She is likely to race on the speed and is one of the leading contenders.
CAPE LIGHTS finished 1.7 lengths behind the second selection last time. She is 1.5kgs better off at the weights today and should finish closer as a result. With luck in running, she should have a say in the outcome of this contest.
Race 6
READY TO CHARGE is better than his last start in the Non-Black Type Cape Racing Gold Rush. He was not disgraced in his previous two outings in the Western Cape. He finished third in his only attempt over this C&D. If all went well with his travels back to Gauteng, he may be the one to beat.
ELEGANT ICE has finished second in her last two starts. It must be noted that Swing Upon A Star has come out and won again since. She carries a light mass of 50.5kgs and if not in need of the run, she should give the males a run for their money.
PRINCEOFGREEN was running on when fourth over 1450m on the Inside course last time. It must be noted that Fully Loaded has come out and won again since. He does have work to do at the weights, but is in a good space and should be involved at the finish.
Race 7
MRS BROWNING is a winner of her last two starts. She returns from a well-deserved 11-week break which would have done her the world of good. She has won three times and finished third once from as many starts over this C&D. If not in need of the run, she should notch up the hat-trick.
ONE FELL SWOOP won a game race in the Grade 3 Betway National Currency Sprint last time. She has won once and finished second once from three starts over this C&D. She is likely to race on the speed and may be hard to peg back.
ALULA’S STAR is better than her last start over 1000m on this course. She has won twice and finished second twice from seven starts over this C&D. If putting her best foot forward, she should go close to winning.
Race 8
COSMIC STAR raced from just off the pace last time and found one too good in the form of Power Broker. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He has won once, finished second twice and third once from as many starts on this course. He can notch up his fourth-career victory.
AUSSENKEHR was caught late when second over 1160m on this course last time. He has won three times and finished second once from six starts on this course. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
EXCHANGE STUDENT is better than his last start in the Western Cape. It must be noted that multiple horses from that form line have come out and won since. He will strip much fitter and if finding the form of his penultimate run, he should have a say.
Race 9
ARTICUNO stayed on when fourth in her last start over this C&D. It must be noted that Law Of Success has come out and won again since. The daughter of Vercingetorix has scope and with Kabelo Matsunyane in the saddle, she can return to winning ways.
COVERT OPERATOR should have finished closer to the winner last time as he received a bump at the 150m mark. He returns from a 20-week break which would have done him the world of good. The son of Coup De Grace will be mowing down the frontrunners.
IN THE ETHER was doing her usual best work late when fifth over this distance on the Inside course last time. Three of her five career victories have come over this distance. She gets the services over 3kgs claiming apprentice Trent Mayhew which will assist her cause
