BettingDiarySunday sees Stage 9 of The Tour de France starting in Pau and finishing in Laruns, a route which covers 153 kilometres. We take a look at the stage from a betting perspective.

Stage 8 Wrap

A large breakaway with no one threatening the Yellow Jersey went away yesterday. It looked quite likely that it would be a stage without a lot of action. In the end though we got quite a bit with stage winner, Peters having to hold off Zakarin up the final climb before pulling clear on the descent to win the stage to the GC men doing battle further down the road.

One big casualty yesterday was Thibaut Pinot, the great French hope, who sadly cracked on the penultimate climb and who once again will not be involved in the business end of the Tour de France.

Adam Yates, the yellow jersey battled on the final climb, but he managed to hang in and retain his jersey while Pogacar put Friday’s time losses and the cross winds behind him to gain 40 seconds and get back into the Yellow Jersey race.

Today’s stage has a flat start and then things get tough and it does have a look of a stage that the breakaway should get well clear and contest at the win.

Stage 9 Verdict

The climbs are not as tough as we saw on Saturday and if the breakaway isn't allowed to have their day then this could be one for the favourite Julian Alaphilippe. The descent towards the finish will suit him so if he can stay with his GC rivals on that final Cat 1 climb he will certainly be the man to beat.

Stage 9 Bet: Julian Alaphilippe at 33/10
