Race 1
This is a weak Maiden Plate and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is SECRET CHORD from the St John Gray stable. He has finished fourth in his last three starts, the latest of which was over 1160m on this course. The son of Bezrin drops to the 1000m and the tongue-tie may do the trick. Gavin Lerena is booked to ride and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.
ETHANATOR was in need of his comeback run over 1200m on the Inside course. He over raced in the early stages and should have no issues with the drop to 1000m. He will strip a much fitter horse and is one of the leading contenders.
MAGICAL STONES has run two moderate races since returning from a 15-week break. It must be noted that Mask On has come out and won again since. She is back on the Highveld and can improve to finish in the placings.
Race 2
SUMMER FLING showed good improvement in her last start over 1600m on this course. She stayed on at the finish that day, but found one too good in the form of Gimme A Nother. She takes a drop-in class and should strip much fitter. If confirming her recent improvement, she can go one better.
UNIVERSAL LOVE stayed on when third over 2000m on the Inside course. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. She is likely to be settled near the rear of the field and will be mowing down the frontrunners.
ARIEL’S JET finished 0.7 lengths behind the second selection last time. She is 1kg better off at the weights today and there should not be much separating them at the finish.
Race 3
BONETE ran a good race when second in the Listed Summer Pudding Handicap last time. She set the pace that day, but was caught late by Silver Sanctuary. She has won once and finished third once from three starts over this C&D. The daughter of Querari takes a drop-in class and if this run has not come too soon, she can win a race of this nature.
LITTLEMARYSUNSHINE produced a typical second run after a rest last time. Her penultimate run when second over 1500m was encouraging. She is having her peak run and with Gavin Lerena back in the saddle, she should run a big race.
QUIET REBELLION stayed on when second over 2000m on the Inside course last time. She has won twice and finished third twice from seven starts over this distance. She is in a good space and merits obvious inclusion.
Race 4
PEWTER SKY stayed on when 3 lengths behind Dungeons last time. His two efforts prior to that outing were good. He has won once, finished second once and third twice from eight starts on this course. He is likely to be switched off near the rear of the field and will be mowing down the frontrunners.
VESUVIO lacked extra late when fourth over 1800m last time. Two of his three career victories have come over this distance. He jumps from a handy draw of four and is one of the leading contenders.
NAPOLEON finished 2.95 lengths behind the second choice last time. He is only 1kg better off at the weights today and should finish closer as a result.
Race 5
WE ARE THE LOGANS may not have seen out the 1800m last time. His penultimate run when third in the Grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes was encouraging. He has won once, finished second once and third twice from as many starts over this distance. He will strip a much fitter horse and if putting his best foot forward, he should be too good for this field.
MOUNT PILATUS stayed on when fourth over 1400m last time. The son of Pomodoro will love the rise to the mile. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
GOLDEN PROSPECT was in need of his comeback run over 1200m on the Vaal Classic course. He will enjoy the rise in distance and should strip much fitter. On best form shown, he should be involved at the finish.
Race 6
FEATHER BOA won a good race in the Grade 2 Betway Joburg Spring F & M Challenge last time. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. She has finished second once and third once from as many starts over this C&D. She would have come on from her last outing and from her good draw of three, she can follow up.
PEACH DAIQUIRI returns from an 18-week break and is having her first run for the Tony Peter stable. She won her only attempt over this distance. If not in need of the run, she should pose a threat.
CAPTAIN PEG is the stable companion of the top choice. She is at her best on the Inside course, but is in a good space and should run another honest race.
Race 7
NO FILTER is better than her last start in the Listed National Colour Stakes. Her penultimate run when second over 1200m at the Vaal was encouraging. She is likely to race on the speed if getting away to a clean start and she may be hard to peg back.
MIST IN SCOTLAND ran a good race when second over this distance on the Vaal Classic course last time. She has won twice, finished second twice and third once from six starts over this trip. The tongue-tie seems to have done the trick and she is a big runner.
CHROME TOURMALINE followed up her maiden win with an impressive victory over this distance on the Vaal Classic course. She takes another rise in class, but is a progressive type and can notch up the hat- trick.
Race 8
BEAMONESQUE was super-impressive when winning his maiden at the second time of asking. He showed good speed, found another kick and won with a ton in hand. The son of Rafeef looks to have plenty of class and with Gavin Lerena retaining the ride, he should follow up.
FOSTINOVO was doing his best work late when third in his last start over 1450m on the Inside course. He won his only attempt over this C&D. He is back in Handicap Company and must be included in all bets.
LAW OF SUCCESS finished 0.35 lengths behind CORNWALL last time. She is 0.5kgs better off at the weights today and there should not be much separating the pair in the run down to the line
