mtn8Update, match moved to Wednesday due to bad weather. Cape Town City clash with Orlando Pirates in the first leg of the MTN8 semi finals on and the defending champions start as the bookmakers favourites

Cape Town City

A late penalty from Darwin Gonzalez was enough to see City win 1-0 away to Sekhukhune in the quarter finals. Gonzales had missed from the spot towards the end of the first half but made no mistake second time around and City held on to reach the semi finals. City now renew rivalry with Pirates who beat them in both league meetings last season, both by a 2-0 scoreline.

City have reached the MTN8 final just once before, in 2021 when they lost to Sundowns on spot kicks after a 1-1 draw.

Orlando Pirates

Pirates are the defending champions of this competition and can also lay claim to having lifted this trophy in 3 of the last 4 seasons.

They came through their quarter final at home to Supersport with a 3-1 after extra time. The Bucs had the better of the game and led 1-0 thanks to a goal from Olisa Ndah jut before the break but Supersport levelled things up shortly afterwards. Monnapule Saleng restored Pirates lead early in the first period of extra time and Evidence Makgopa effectively sealed victory on 107 minutes.

The Betting

City are 3.43/1 to win the first leg with the draw 2.17/1 and Pirates are 1.07 favourites

The Verdict:

The second leg of this tie takes place on Saturday with the winner meeting Sundowns or Stellenbosch in the final. Pirates have the cup pedigree and impressed in beating Supersport whereas City's quarter final win was more workmanlike.

Nothing will be decided on the night but my gut feel is Pirates can edge it.
