WSB Logo Orange 80x80Netherlands take on South Africa in the Round of 16 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Sunday and we take a look at the game from a betting angle.

OUTRIGHT BETTING

Let’s start with a look at the Outright Betting where England are trading as 28/10 favourites ahead of the USA and Spain priced at 9/2. The Netherlands are 12/1 and South Africa are rank outsiders to win the Tournament at 250/1.

THE NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands topped their group which included pre-tournament favourites the United States. They played 3 matches winning 2 and drawing 1 and opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Portugal. Their second match was against the United States where they took a 17th minute lead only to concede a 62nd minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw. Their final match was against Vietnam and they made short work of their opponents winning 7-0 with 4 of those goals coming in the first-half.

SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa qualified 2nd behind Sweden in Group G and you could have got odds of 11/1, that they would make it out of their group at the beginning of the Tournament. They took the lead early in the second-half against Sweden in their opener, but lost to a 90th minute winner. Their second game against Argentina finished 2-2 which was disappointing as Banyana Banyana had led 2-0 heading into the last 20 minutes.

That draw put tremendous pressure on their final match against Italy which was a must win and when they fell behind to an 11th minute penalty they were as big as 25/1 to win the match. Banyana Banyana came storming back though to take a 2-1 lead only to concede an equaliser in the 74th minute. It was then that Kgatlana popped up with the 92nd minute winner to send South Africa through to the last 16 for the first time.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

The Netherlands and South Africa have met 3 times in friendly Internationals over the years and it doesn’t make pleasant reading for South Africa. The Netherlands won the last time they met 5-1 in 2022 and they beat South Africa 2-1 in 2019 and 2-0 in 2016.

Netherlands 1/4

Draw 11/2

South Africa 9/1

The bookies are giving South Africa very little chance in this one, but they were 11/2 to beat Italy so this team have made a habit of defying the bookmakers’ odds.

The Netherlands though have looked one of the better teams in the competition and I quite like the 12/1 on them to win the Tournament as a bit of value. Goals are expected in this game and over 2.5 goals is trading at 4/10 and you can get over 3.5 goals at 19/20.

If you fancy South Africa to win this game then finding a better angle is quite easy and as impressed as I have been with them I do think the Netherlands will be too strong.

There have been plenty of goals in Banyana Banyana games and with the Netherlands making a habit of scoring earlier I think this game is going to open up and we are going to get 4 goals or more in total.

Suggested Bet: Total goals over 3.5 at 19/20
