Racing gets underway at 11:30 with a juvenile maiden plate followed by a conditional maiden and we spring into action in Race 3. Let's move on to the betting tips.

Note all prices quoted are correct at the time of writing but are subject to change.

Race 3: 12:40 BETWAY SUMMER CUP CONSOLATION 2000m

A tricky one for the start of the Place Accumulator and I will take my chance that top weight Gilded Butterfly will defy a 118 day absence and a habit of being slow out of the gates. Has won fresh before and her form against class acts like Bless My Stars put her right there if not in need of the run.

Selection: Gilded Butterfly to win at 5/1

Race 4: 13:20 NEW TURF CARRIERS MERCHANTS (Grade 3) 1160m

Over to the speedsters for the start of the pick 6 where a pool of R10m is projected. Main Defender will be a popular choice here after his connections opted to run in this race rather than the Dingaans. Dyce is the most likely danger in my book and Dave the King is intriguing coming way back in distance but I will stick with the favourite.

Selection: Main Defender to win at 11/10

Race 5: 13:55 BETWAY FILLIES MILE (Grade 3) 1600m

There shouldn't be much between Egyptian Mau and White Pearl on collateral form and there are others with chances for the first leg of Jackpot 1. White Pearl has by far the better of the draw but was beaten by the selection who was returning from a break and reportedly not fully tuned up last time out.

Selection: Egyptian Mau to win at 7/2

Race 6: 14:30 JONSSON WORKWEAR DINGAANS (Grade 2) 1600m

Sandringham Summit is the class act and with his rival Main Defender running earlier in the day he looks a worthy banker here. The odds are restrictive though and Guy Gibson should enjoy the step up to 1600m and is included in a boxed exacta

Selection: Tote Boxed Exacta 1 and 6 Sandingham Summit and Guy Gibson

Race 7: 15:35 BETWAY SUMMER CUP (Grade 1) 2000m

Final field, jockeys, trainers, weights, draw and updated betting are available here

The big one and you can make some sort of case for the vast majority if not all of the field. There is a quartet carry over with a pool of around R4m expected and it could well pay rockets.

At the time of writing Puerto Manzano and Durban July winner Winchester Mansion were vying for favouritism with the likes of Cousin Casey, Bless My Stars and Atticus Finch also trading in single figures. The argument might not be settled between those runners though and in the early part of the week Zeus and Son of Raj came in for market support.

It might be the biggest race of the day but it doesn't necessarily have to be the biggest bet, especially if you fancy the longer priced runners. KZN raider Royal Victory, if truly appreciating the 2000m trip, could be a huge value play here at current odds of 66/1. Nathan Kotzen's 4yo gelding returned to form last time out, coming from the back of the field to win a Pinnacle over 1900m in a manner which suggests this distance is within the compass. No stranger to Joburg having campaigned there in top 3 year old races last season the thought of this son of Pathfork carrying just 54kg is an exciting one.

(Hold my hands up here my family has a small share in this boy but little damage can be done at the price).

Selections: Royal Victory win at 66/1 and top 4 finish at 11/1

Race 8: 16:15 RACEHORSE OWNERS ASSOCIATION STAYERS 3200m

Not the biggest of fields but tricky none the less and a chance is taken on Breeze Over who is nothing but consistent.

Selection: Breeze Over to win at 11/2

Race 9: 16:50 JOBURG TOURISM CARRY ON ALICE STAKES (Grade 3) 1160m

Absolutely wide open and whilst Time Fo Orchids has been frustrating to follow (536 days since last win) and is having her first look at Turffontein after travelling from KZN, gate 11 up the straight isn't a bad place to be and she is probably much better than her record suggests.

Selection: Time Fo Orchids win at 16/1 and top 4 finish at 5/2

Race 10: 17:25 SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS MR 84 HANDICAP 1800m

We drop into handicap company for the last and I hope you've had a truly enjoyable and profitable days punting. American Star has won and placed third in his last 2 starts since being gelded, lightly raced with just 8 starts for 2 wins, Richard Fourie retains the ride and he should give us a run for our money in another very competitive race.

Selection: American Star win at 6/1
