Race 1
This is a weak Maiden Handicap and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is IRISH LUCK from the Duncan Howells stable. He is better than his last start over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. His best career effort came over this distance. The blinkers will sharpen him up and with luck in running, he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.
GRIFFIN PARK is having his first run for the MJ Odendaal stable. The son of Querari has plenty of scope and with Richard Fourie in the saddle, he should show improvement.
FOREIGN LADY’S last start can be ignored as she was reported to be not striding out. If finding the form of her penultimate run, she should give the males a run for their money.
Race 2
STANLEY PARK has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. He has won twice, finished second twice and third four times from eleven starts over this distance. He has cracked a good draw of two and with the services of 2.5kgs claiming apprentice Kobeli Lihaba, he may be the one to side with. He is carded to race on 14 January 2024 and his progress in that race will need to be monitored.
TRIBUTE TO YOU fought hard in his last start but was touched off by Hope Is Power. Two of his four career victories have come over this distance. Apprentice Trent Mayhew takes the 4kgs off his back and with luck in running, he should pose a threat.
DONQUERARI’S last two starts have been good. He should have won his last start as he had no luck in the straight. He is carded to race on 14 January 2024 and his progress in that race will need to be monitored.
Race 3
BLUE HORIZON showed massive improvement in her last start over 1600m on this course. The manner in which she finished off her race that day suggests that she will love the rise to 1900m. The blinkers seem to have done the trick and she may be the one to side with.
OFF LIMITS showed good improvement in her last start over 1600m on this course. She stayed on nicely at the finish that day and will love the rise to 1900m. She is a progressive type and is one of the leading contenders.
JOAN THE WAD has finished fourth in her last four starts. The way the race was run last time, did not suit her. She will enjoy the rise to 1900m and with luck in running, she should be involved at the finish.
Race 4
CATCH THE TUNE ran on from last when fourth in his last start over 2000m on the turf. He has won once, finished second four times and third three times from fourteen starts on this course. He is having his peak run today and will be cherry-ripe. If not too far out of his ground turning for home, he can return to winning ways.
SLEEK AS SILK should have won her last start over 1600m. The manner in which she finishes off her races suggests that she will love the rise to 1800m. The daughter of William Longsword should give the males a run for their money.
AFROPOLITAN was an easy winner of his last start over 1900m on this course. He returns from a well-deserved 12-week break. Apprentice Kobeli Lihaba takes the 2.5kgs off his back which will assist his chances.
Race 5
RODRIGUEZ stayed on when fourth over 1700m on this course last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. Two of his five career victories have come over this distance. If not too far out of his ground turning for home, he can return to winning ways.
SUNDANCE KID has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. The manner in which he finishes off his races suggests that he will enjoy the rise to the mile. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
MIDNIGHT CALLER stayed on when fourth over 1400m on the turf last time. He gets the services of 2.5kgs claiming apprentice Kobeli Lihaba which will help his cause. He is in a good space and can finish in the placings.
Race 6
This is a competitive Merit Rated 84 Handicap for the girls and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is ZINIKELE from the Gareth van Zyl stable. She returns from a 10-week break which may have done her the world of good. She has won twice and finished second twice from five starts over this C&D. If not in need of this outing, she should find herself in the winner’s enclosure.
LADY HEIST should have finished closer to the winner last time. She has won three times, finished second twice and third once from ten starts on this course. She gets the services of 4kgs claiming apprentice Trent Mayhew which will assist her cause.
SKYTRIX stayed on when fourth in her post-maiden effort over 1400m on this course. She does take another rise in class, but has plenty of scope and should be up to the task at hand
Race 7
BOWIE has good recent form lines to his credit. It must be noted that William Robertson has come out and won again since. He takes a slight drop-in class and from pole position, he can return to winning ways.
WILLIAM RUFUS won a good race in his last start over 1200m on this course. He takes on stronger, but is in a good space and he can follow up with another victory.
WYLIE RILEY has good recent form lines to his name. He has won twice, finished second once and third twice from eight starts over this distance. He is likely to race on the speed and is a solid back up for the Gareth van Zyl stable.
Race 8
PHAKA IMALI raced from a handy position over 1200m on the turf last time and stayed on to finish fourth. He has won twice, finished second twice and third once from ten starts over this C&D. He does have a wide draw to overcome, but Richard Fourie knows him well and he should give him all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
PURPLE POWAHOUSE has fair recent form lines to his name. Three of his four career victories have come over this C&D. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
TRAFALGAR SQUARE stayed on when fourth over 1000m on this course last time. He runs well for jockey Serino Moodley and if getting away to a clean start, he should have a say in the outcome of this contest
