Race 1
This is a weak Maiden Plate for the girls and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is WAITFORGREENLIGHT from the Fabian Habib stable. She has been disappointing in her last two starts. She finished 1.05 lengths behind FREEDOM SQUARE in her penultimate run. She is 1.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. Capable work rider Tshepiso Matsoele is booked to ride and he may get the best out of her.
FREEDOM SQUARE‘S last three starts have been fair. On her best form shown, she should be competitive in this line-up.
MORE THAN ALL‘S last start can be ignored as she was reported to be not striding out. Her penultimate run over this trip on the Vaal Classic course was encouraging. If getting away to a clean start, she should have a say in the outcome of this contest.
Race 2
ARTICUNO’S last two starts before given a 32-week break were good. The daughter of Vercingetorix would have strengthened up during her time off the track. She meets the right field this afternoon and if fit, she should be the one to beat.
GOLD AGENT’S last two starts have been fair. She shows good speed in her races and will enjoy the drop to 1000m. Should the top choice fluff her lines, she may be the one to pick up the pieces.
VATHOMVLAFFIE produced a typical second run after a rest last time. Her penultimate run when third against male company was encouraging. S’manga Khumalo rides and he may be able to get the best out of her.
Race 3
SAKHALA IS’CATHULO showed massive improvement in his last start over this distance on the Vaal Classic course. He showed good speed, but was caught late by Coppola. It is interesting that the blinkers have been removed, but he is in a good space and may be the one to side with.
GLAWARI has good recent form lines to her credit. She has finished second once and third twice from six starts over this distance. She should throw out a big challenge to the top choice.
THING CALLED LOVE returns from a 28-week break, during which time she would have strengthened up. The well-related daughter of Rafeef has plenty of scope and there should be improvement to come.
Race 4
MASTERSHIP is lightly raced with decent form lines to his credit. He raced from a handy position over 1400m last time, moved up but was outrun late by Presley. The son of Master Of My Fate tries the cheekpieces for the first time which may do the trick. From pole position, he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.
REMAINS OF THE DAY was unlucky not to have won last time as he clipped heels at the 1400m mark. The son of Hat Puntano is a progressive type and with a bit of luck in running, he should be competitive.
VAN MEIJEL produced a decent comeback run over 1200m on this course. He would have come on from the run and should strip much fitter. Gavin Lerena is booked to ride and he should run into the money.
Race 5
UNIVERSAL LOVE cost herself leaving the start last time but the manner in which she finished off her race was encouraging. She finished 1 length behind SPRING IN HEAVEN in her penultimate run. She is 2.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. If getting away to a clean start, she can return to winning ways.
SPRING IN HEAVEN’S last three starts have been good. The manner in which she finishes off her races suggests that she will love the rise to 2000m. She is carded to race on 13 January 2024 and her progress in that race will need to be monitored.
PRETTY IN PEARLS finished 1.25 lengths behind ROSY LEMON last time. She is 1.5kgs better off at the weights today and there should not be much separating the pair at the finish.
Race 6
BIOFARMER is the best bet on the programme. He was given a peach of a ride when winning his last start over this distance on the Vaal Classic course. The compression mask has done the trick on the son of Pomodoro. Piere Strydom retains the ride and he should follow up.
EIFFEL TOWER finished 0.5 lengths behind the top choice last time. He is 0.5kgs better off at the weights today and there should not be much separating them at the finish.
KAKIEBOS won a good race over this distance at the Vaal, at the second time of asking. The daughter of Flower Alley is a progressive type. She does take on stronger, but has plenty of scope and should be up to the task at hand.
Race 7
RED BOMBER’S last four starts have been good. He raced from a handy position over 1400m on the Standside course last time, but was caught late by Texas Red. The son of Lancaster Bomber has won once and finished third once from as many starts on this course. He tries the mile for the first time and if seeing out the extra distance on offer, he can notch up his third-career victory.
COMMAND PILOT produced a strong finish when second over 1450m on the Vaal Classic course last time. The son of Lancaster Bomber will love the rise to the mile and he is one of the leading contenders.
BARBARESCO returns from a 14-week break, during which time he was gelded. He tries the mile and carries a handy galloping mass of 52kgs. He is carded to race on 13 January 2024 and his progress in that race will need to be monitored.
Race 8
KALAHARI BLUE received a bump leaving the start last time, but stayed on to finish second. He has won twice, finished second twice and third once from six starts on this course. The son of Querari is having his peak run today and will be cherry-ripe. Gavin Lerena retains the ride and from his good draw of three, he may be the one to side with.
VAR PARK was an easy winner of his last start over this distance. He received a six-pound penalty for that victory. He is likely to race on the speed and may be hard to peg back.
PONTIAC produced a typical second run after a rest last time. He has finished second once and third once from as many starts over this C&D. He drops in class and will be at peak fitness.
Race 9
CHROME TOURMALINE got going too late when second in her last start over 1160m on the Standside course. The daughter of Gimmethegreenlight won her maiden under jockey Gavin Lerena. She is drawn in barrier two and can go one better.
WOMEN OF FAME finished 2.25 lengths behind WINGS WITHIN ME last time. She is 2.5kgs better off at the weights today and there should not be much separating the pair in the run down to the line.
WINGS WITHIN ME won a good race in her last start over this distance on the Vaal Classic course. She meets similar company this afternoon and with Piere Strydom in the saddle, she can follow up
