Race 1

This is a competitive Maiden Plate and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is CHARIOT OF FIRE from the Lucky Houdalakis stable. He produced a promising debut effort over 1200m at the Vaal. He was slow into stride, raced green but stayed on at the finish. The son of Captain Of All would have gained from the experience and should love the rise to 1450m. With the natural improvement that is expected, he may be the one to side with.

FLIGHT ENGINEER has shown improvement in each of his races to date. He set the pace over this C&D last time, but found one too good in the form of Twelve Oclock High. He is a progressive type and is one of the leading contenders.

ICHACHA finished 0.75 lengths behind the second choice on debut. He has cracked a good draw of three and should make the natural improvement.

Race 2

FIREBURST is a good looking daughter of Fire Away. She was green in running over 1200m on debut but stayed on well to finish second. She would have come on from the run and should be at home over 1450m. With the natural improvement that is expected, she should take a power of beating.

ANCIENT WISDOM rallied late when second on debut over this C&D. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. Should the top choice fluff her lines, she may be the one to pick up the pieces.

TIPPERARY set the pace over this C&D last time but was outrun late by Accept Cookies. Raymond Danielson retains the ride and from her good draw of two, she may be hard to peg back.

Race 3

HIGH QUEUE has good recent form lines to his credit. He raced from a handy position over this distance at the Vaal last time and rallied late to finish second. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. S’manga Khumalo retains the ride and he may be rewarded for consistency.

CITY LIGHTS is a filly taking on the males. She has good consistent form lines to her credit. She stayed on at the finish over 1800m on this course last time, but found one too good in the form of Incredible Indrani. She should give the males a run for their money.

GAMER was running on too late when second over 1600m last time. The son of Potala Palace should love the rise to 2000m and he must be included in all bets.

Race 4

ZEUS is better than his last start in the Grade 3 World Pool Gold Cup. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He won his only attempt over this C&D. The 6yo gelding is the class horse in this contest and despite giving weight away, he should take a power of beating.

RAISEAHALLELUJAH finished 3.25 lengths behind PRIME EXAMPLE last time. He is 6kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. The 7yo gelding will be mowing down the frontrunners.

GOOD COUNCIL showed good signs of a form return in his last start over 1800m. He would have come on from the run and should strip much fitter. If confirming his recent improvement, he should be involved in the fight to the finish.

Race 5

APACHE SON ran on strongly when winning his last start over 1700m at the Vaal. He received a three- pound penalty for that victory. The son of The Apache may be ahead of the handicapper. He is drawn wide in barrier ten but Philasande Mxoli knows him well and he should give him all the necessary assistance from the saddle.

ATARIME is a winner of his last two starts, the latest of which was over 1600m on this course. He is in a good space and can notch up the hat-trick.

CELTIC RUSH finished 2.25 lengths behind the top choice last time. He is 2kgs better off at the weights today and should finish closer as a result.

Race 6

CLIFF HANGER showed good speed in the Listed Betway Spring Spree Stakes last time before getting outrun late by Back In Business. He has won once, finished second twice and third once from five starts over this distance. The son of Canford Cliffs will strip a much fitter horse. He is the stable elect with S’manga Khumalo up and can return to winning ways.

ANFIELDS ROCKET showed good speed over 1160m last time before getting caught late by Quantum Theory. He has won three times and finished third once from five starts over this trip. Muzi Yeni is booked to ride and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.

DYCE returns from a 15-week break which would have done him the world of good. He is the class horse in this contest and if not in need of the run, he should have a say in the outcome of this contest.

Race 7

CAPE LIGHTS stayed on when fifth in the Listed Off To Stud Stakes last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished fourth that day has come out and won since. She has won once and finished third once from as many starts over this C&D. It is encouraging that Muzi Yeni is booked to ride and she can return to winning ways.

MAX THE MAGICIAN stayed on when third over 1600m on this course last time. He has won over this distance previously. From pole position, he should be the first male past the post.

BOB’S YOUR UNCLE finished 1 length behind the second selection last time. He is 1kg better off at the weights today and there should not be much separating the pair at the finish.

Race 8

COPPOLA raced from a prominent position over 1100m at the Vaal last time and stayed on to finish third. The manner in which he finishes off his races suggests that he should love the rise to 1450m. With a bit of luck from his awkward draw of eight, he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.

WE ARE THE LOGANS was running on when third over 1200m on the Vaal Classic course last time. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He finished second in his only attempt over this distance. Despite his big mass, he should pose a threat.

TURBO POWER fought hard for his last victory over 1200m on this course. Apprentice Trent Mayhew retains the ride and the pair merit healthy respect
