Race 1
HEY HEY JULIA lost a length leaving the start over 1000m last time and stayed on to finish 2nd. The manner in which she stayed on at the finish that day suggests that she will love the rise to 1200m. The daughter of Canford Cliffs meets the right field and she can shed her maiden tag.
LILAC SNOW has run two fair races to date. She returns from a 10-week break, during which time she would have strengthened up. The daughter of What A Winter has scope and she is one of the leading contenders.
EMBLEM OF THE SUN is the stable companion of the top choice. She ran a fair race over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside course last time. She drops in trip and can finish in the placings.
Race 2
CAPTAIN CLEVER ran a fair race on debut over 1160m at Turffontein. He returns from a 12-week break, during which time he was gelded. The son of Captain Of All has plenty of scope and with the natural improvement that is expected, he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.
ONE AND ALL showed good improvement in his last start over 1160m at Turffontein. He raced from just off the pace and tried hard all the way to the line. If confirming his recent improvement, he should fight out the finish.
TAKEYOURBESTSHOT showed improvement when third over this C&D last time. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. The son of What A Winter is a progressive type and may have more to come.
Race 3
CAPTAIN JIM stayed on when third over 1200m on this course last time. The son of Captain Of All would have come on from the run and should love the rise to the mile. Gavin Lerena is booked to ride and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.
RED LEGEND received a bump leaving the start last time and never got into the race. He ran a good race when third over 1450m on the Classic course in his penultimate run. If finding the form of that race, he should pose a massive threat.
ROLL OF THE DICE ran a fair race over 2000m last time. He drops back to the mile and on best form shown, he should run a big race in this field.
Race 4
SUGAR BLAST set the pace over this C&D last time and kept finding to hold all challengers at bay. He returns from a well-deserved 16-week break. Despite his big mass of 62kgs, he can follow up with another victory.
STREWN SKY has good consistent form lines to his credit. He has won once and finished third once from as many starts over this distance. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
MILLAHUE challenged strongly over this distance last time but found one too good in the form of Vesuvio. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He is carded to race on 24 August 2024 and his progress in that race will need to be monitored.
Race 5
CALIDA finished 1 length behind RISKY BUSINESS last time. He is 3.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. Calvin Habib retains the ride and the pair will be mowing down the frontrunners.
RISKY BUSINESS is a winner of her last two starts, the latest of which was over 1400m on this course. The 6yo mare received a five-pound penalty for her last victory. She is in a good space and can notch up the hat-trick.
ZOOMBOMBER’S last three starts have been decent. He set the pace over 1600m on the Hollywoodbets Greyville polytrack last time and did not go on with the effort. Back on the Highveld on the hard ground, he should be hard to peg back.
Race 6
NORDIC REBEL has good recent form lines to his credit. He stayed on when second over 1600m at Turffontein last time. Eight of his thirteen victories have come on this course. His best form has been under Gavin Lerena and he races well fresh. The 11yo gelding should be the one to beat.
WHISPERS OF WAR’S last two starts have been fair. He has won once and finished second once from three starts over this distance. Apprentice Trent Mayhew takes the 2.5kgs off his back and he may be hard to catch.
ROCK OF BISMANTOVA is a winner of his last two starts on this course. He received a five-pound penalty for his last victory. He is in a good space and can notch up the hat-trick.
Race 7
COPPOLA finished 0.5 lengths behind WARM WINTER NITE last time. He is 2kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. The son of Skitt Skizzle is having his peak run today and should be cherry-ripe. He is likely to race on the speed and can go one better.
WARM WINTER NITE finished 0.5 lengths behind VEGAS HI RISE last time. He is 0.5kgs better off at the weights today and there should not be much separating the pair at the finish.
VEGAS HI RISE ran on powerfully when winning his last start over 1200m on this course. He received a three-pound penalty for that victory. Malesela Katjedi retains the ride and the combination merit healthy respect.
Race 8
WRITTEN IN STONE won his last start over 1200m on this course, at a nice price. He quickened up well that day and drew off in the closing stages. He received a five-pound penalty for that victory. The son of Pathfork meets a similar field this afternoon and can follow up.
JET CAT finished 2.25 lengths behind the top choice last time. He is 2.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. However, WRITTEN IN STONE won easier than the official margin suggests and he may still have the upper hand.
TOGETHER AGAIN finished 1.3 lengths behind DANCING DORA last time. She is 2.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough to turn the form around
